Black elastic 20-25mm wide from Spotlight. Sew the ends over and make hooks from coat hanger wire to attach.

I use a 1.75" - 2" aluminium horizontal blind slat, painted black, attached to the barrel with 1/2" velcro dots.

This has served me well for 25 years.

Ditto, but not for quite as long  Concave side up btw.
I did try just attaching it to the bottom of the scope shade so ut wasn't touching the barrel but,,, well try it, it's interesting.

I've also see wider coreflut versions being used. Seems to work.

How much difference does a mirage band actually make? Is it worth the effort?

If you get a cracker morning with no wind and a nice low temp they are needed.
I try to do my load development at 1000 Yards with ladder and group tests in these conditions.
I always curse when I forget my mirage shield.
After around 10 shots you start to see mirage but it's not on the range it's from the heat rising from your barrel.
It moves your sight picture which defeats the great testing morning you are having with a nice clear sight picture at 50X magnification.
