223 velocities

Post by mitchellchandler_au »

Hi all,
Today I was testing my 223 with the 80gn SMK with 25.0 of 2208 with a velocity of 2810 and an ES of 10fps but i cannot put much more powder in the case (lapua match)and I recon i wont be able to get anymore the 25.8 in the case before it becomes compressed. Will 2810 be alright or will I have to change something. :?

see ya all later,

mitchell

Mitchell,

I would be looking at a velocity of around 2950 as a minimum (I run 25.4 of 2208 @ 3050 out of a 30" 7.7T for <or= 5fps ES)but it would depend on what barrel length and twist rate you have.
Your reloading techniques must be sound to get a low ES so you are half way there!!!
Ultimately, you will have to conduct a ladder test to find the most accurate load for YOUR rifle. Don't think of this as being extra work because it is quite entertaining to discover the results...all-be-it many rounds and combinations latter.
Many people swear by Lapua but I get my best results from Winchester and Rem 7.5 primers whilst FL resizing EVERY time and batching projectiles in 0.1Gr lots.

.223 Rem velocities

Post by mike H »

In PMC cases up to 92.5 grs wt, I used a 210mm drop tube to fill cases.Usually 25.3grs. Now use 2206H @ 24.3grs for 2953 fps.
Have not been able to get E-S down that low.Best I can manage is around 30fps.
Far more important to have accuracy, than bragging velocities.

I think I might just fill the case to the brim and hope for the best

Maybe 25.5 will fit in the case I will try it tomorrow. yesterday I put the data into the point blank software to see how it compares to my 6mmbr using the 105 A-MAX out to 1000yards it seems to be only be about 2 MOA behind the 6mmbr and about 150fps behind in velocity. Maybe the software is faulted or I put the data in wrong.
Thanks, anymore help will be greatly appreciated BTW my barrel is 28 inch MAB crome moly in 1:8 twist.
