Bye bye brakes
Bye bye brakes
Just got told today that muzzle brakes will be no longer legal for benchrest shooting. Can anyone confirm this? It’s not on the SSR’s but they haven’t been updated recently either...

As far as I know nothing has been sent to STA's but that doesn't mean much these days. The current rules are based on the IBS rules so unless they've changed I'd say it's BS.

I asked our range liaison officer today if we could have them but since it’s a commonwealth range we can’t. But his indication was that at a recent nraa meeting the rules were set so only service rifles with integral brakes were going to be allowed and the SSR’s should be reflecting that soon. I hope the 1kBR community and S&T’s were consulted if that was the case. Until SSR’s are changed on paper it’s only hearsay. But anyway I can’t do it so play on.

Hi Brad
As far as I know NSWRA has had no communication regarding muzzle brakes recently. There is a NRAA workshop next month and as far as I know there are no agenda items regarding muzzle brakes.
At the moment both the 600 and 1000 BR rules allow muzzle brakes, both of these are in the NRAA SSR's so unless a particular range or organizing body doesn't allow them "you should be able" to use them. It seems a little strange that range standing orders would prohibit brakes but stranger things have happened.

Hi matt
Agreed, if there are no formal rule changes, go on with it I reckon. Our agreement with the defence force is for no brakes on the range, and I will have to remove it for fly as well. I think a BR AI isn’t much recoil anyway under 17lb but it’s nice to be able to just set them in the bags and run as quick as possible. The 284 is a little more to manage off the bench as your well aware I’m sure.
