ULTRA-LONG RANGE CHALLENGE

Post by Cliff Austen »

The Ultra-Long Range Challenge is on. After being washed out last year we have programmed it for Saturday October 7 to Monday October 9, 2017, at the Coonabarabran Rifle Range, competing from 1000 to 1500 yards.
Details are on the NSW F Class Web Site.
See you there. Cheers. Cliff

Are there any limits at coona for shooting F open?
Apart from calibre?

Tim. I am not sure what you have in mind. But the limits are in accordance with the SSR's for F Open.
Coona is a 7.62 Classification range. Any calibre up to 8mm. Energy is not to exceed 4182 ft-lbs or 5675 joules.
Cheers. Cliff.

This will mean those with 300WSMs can compete, no problem.
Should be a great shoot, cant wait.
How many are coming from interstate for this one of a kind shoot? It should be well worth the travel.

You can use your 230s. You wont want to shoot that one quickly.

Sounds good. Do people camp at the range or travel from Coona?

Quite a few camp on the range and gather around the camp fire or put swags under the big shed. Others get together in Coona.

It's getting close, 2 months to go.
Following on from Rod's comments on camping.
The facilities are basic and best suited to the enthusiast.
No power, long drop toilets and a basic portable shower.
Mobile phone service is about 2 - 3 km away for those using Telstra.
The range is about 25Km out of Coonabarabran.
See you there.
Cheers Cliff

9 days to go to our first Ultra Long Range Challenge.
Friday afternoon 6th October there will be a general practice to check your elevation at 1000 yards.
See you there. It should be an interesting time.
Cheers.

There are about 30 shooters, about half MR, and about a quarter each F Class and F/TR. Conditions were pretty good for Saturday, but even in light winds the 1500 was very tricky, with best F Class scores around 70 out of 90. Dennis Shallis managed a very nice 89 at 1100. I can't give you scores, as I left the range mid-afternoon. Today's is forecast is for rain and stronger wind, so there might be some disruption.
