I'd say just go with your original plan buddy with cutouts.

You could check with some of your hi-profile OZ FTR shooters just to make sure it's ok.

The likes of me turned your original innocent question into a drama but ultimately I just wanted to get some facts out there. Good luck. Rob.

Be mindful too you may be just as well off or maybe even better with a mat/carpet ? With a steel plate it can be an unforgiving surface and with a hard-hold shooting technique it's easy to load the gun with stresses which WILL go feral when the gun recoils during those couple of milliseconds before the bullet exits.
