So after driving the 2200 k’s home from Canberra, I’ve come to the realisation that I need to get setup to fly with all my FTR equipment.
I’ve redesigned my front and rear plates (without compromise) to save about fair bit of weight which will go a long way.
I’m looking to hear from people who regularly fly with rifles, ammo and all the rest of the heavy bits to see what works and what doesn’t.
A couple questions I had straight up;
- Is it ok to leave your rear bag and plate in your mound bag and check it in like that
- do you ship ammo in mtm cases (locked in a case) or vac pack them to save weight if the mtm cases?
- what do you do with cleaning fluids?
So who has some tips on case selection etc. for flying??

The limit for ammo is 5kgs, which is 200 rounds of 308 loaded with 155 gr bullets. Solvents of any sort are "frowned upon". Take the scope off and put it in your "carry-on" bag. When questioned, remember it is an "accessory", not part of a gun.

Be careful carrying with your scope,because of the reticle ,some deem it part of a gun, this happened to us on a return virgin flight from Townsville, we had them posted back,luckly we had someone with us to take the scopes (3 of them )and post back to us, so I would recommend leaving them with the rifle

Although the IATA and Australian written rules say “ a telescopic scope is not a weapon” unfortunately it is up to the nazi on security screening! I have had them absolutely refuse a scope as cabin carry on in Brisbane domestic. Had to check my backpack as luggage as a result! I’ve done a bit of air travel with FClass gear
For domestic travel I have sent tub of gear(mat-rests etc) via courier a week or so earlier to the club with prior arrangement- then same home.
Ammo is the main issue - if you’re lucky someone local might be able to transport it. Otherwise you have to reload there - more issues with component availability.
