Is it time for a change

#1 Postby BillB » Wed Dec 15, 2021 4:25 pm

Is it time for a change ( another option) with the inability of associations to supply 155.5 projectiles would another weight projectile being added to Fstandard help.
Possibly like many others thinking if you cant get projectiles why bother and buy another boat and go fishing
Ps if anyone has 155.5 bergers and want to sell contact me

Bill
The reason the STA's can't supply 155.5 fullbores is that they are no longer in production. Same goes for 155 VLD's.

We could always just dump standard and bring the country into line with international disciplines and just shoot open and FTR . . . . . .

You could-- if you want to lose members. What else would that achieve?
The current situation with projectiles is an example of what happens in a crisis situation when you rely totally on imports.
We had a local manufacturer in NT --what happened??

You would think the associations would inform members about the lack of production and maybe try to find out if the supply will start up again or that is the end
I think if members cannot get the projectiles they want there will be a few giving up getting people to change from what they are used to and like can have quite an effect

F-Std projectile weights are restricted ultimately by the ICFRA limit of 156gn for T/R competition. Is there a viable sub-156gn projectile that is not on the approved list?

You can shoot Nosler and Sierras projectiles, which I believe are still available. Hornady ELD-Ms should probably added to the list and I heard Copperheads were being considered. Someone told me the NRAA were bringing in Sierras themselves??

It's rather ridiculous that any and all 155 gn projectiles are not approved.
Who checks ammo any more??
Who is competent enough to be able to tell the difference between certain projectiles when they are out of the case, let alone when loaded??
Maybe this shortage might open up the minds of those who control what we use and what we don't. I think not.
If restrictions must apply then so too must more frequent checks.

I think the NRAA have got the available 155gn bullets covered except for the Copperhead. The image below is the list from the latest SSR's, downloaded 16th Dec 21.

I think however that the 30 cal rule should be similar to the 22 cal rule

When we went from .303 to 7.62mm, it took Australia 30 years to approve any bolt action rifle, while every other country went that way immediately. In 2012, I suggested we approve any 155gr, instead of waiting 30 years, to come into line with the rest of the world. Apparently I'd missed the point. All I can say is put pressure on your respective State Councillors.

Bet if they approve the Hornady ELD that their price will jump from $65.00 a hundred to somewhere in the 90's just like everything else has. Regards Malcolm.

Barry- they were good for a bit, though now you might have a better chance at hitting the target with a shotgun. Any recent lot tried seem to be very inconsistent. Which is a shame.

I've lost track of where the NRAA is with ammunition levies, but that was traditionally one of the reasons there was an approved list, so the NRAA could facilitate levy collection.

In Australia, we have got ourselves wedged wrt disciplines, having 3 compared to the international standard of F/O & FTR. This leaves little wriggle room on changing bullet weight limits for F-Std.

In terms of local supply, this is difficult as a berger 155.5 is seen as a benchmark. So you would need to able to produce a product that is comparable in accuracy and price into a relatively small marketplace.

IMO, the only way forward for F-Std is for the NRAA to change their revenue model and open up to any sub-156gn bullet.

And of course for T/R as well.
And I agree that the NRAA should not be allowing its revenue model to adversely affect projectile availability. Do other shooting sports in Australia do this? If not perhaps their revenue models could be adopted by us?
