Magnum primers

#1 Postby Dpb00 » Mon Mar 20, 2023 6:01 pm

G'day guys. After some info on magnum primers.

I'm currently running lapua 308 palma brass with 44.60 of 2206h, berger 155.5 and remington 7 1/2 small rifle benchrest primers.

Do I need to adjust my powder if I go to the magnum primers?

Cheers.
Dave

I have run CCI BR4s and CCI 450 mag primers and have not noticed a difference between either. Not sure how they compare to Rem primers. If I was you I'd shoot them both over the same load and see what the group's look like. I wouldn't back the powder charge off.

I thought the Rem 7 and a half were mag primers.

I just did a search on google. Couple of forums saying they are considered a magnum primer similar to the the cci 450. But not labelled as a magnum primer.

I use CCI BR4's and Rem BR 7-1/2 primers in 308 Palma brass and interchange them. No noticeable change in groups or velocity.
I didn't realise the Rem BR's were magnums but.

BTW, a recent SRP test in the USA using just CCI primers showed a big improvement in SD with CCI 450's. Rem 71/2 were not part of the test. The test was over 10 shots each primer.
For what it's worth, I have recently been using Rem 71/2 SRP and changed to
CCI 450's, I'm positive that the groups improved while using the same powder charge in my rifle etc.

But in saying all of the above, The Aust TR team a couple of years ago was using CCI 450's and had a few issues so they all changed to Rem 7.1/2 so I'm told. I don't know if this information is correct though.

I have Peterson Palma brass and found that I had to use CCi 450 {Magnum} primers as well as going to a stiff load of 2206 instead of 2208 but that gave me a one hole group at 100 mts...
Standard small rifle primers, in this case, CCI BR2 and 2208 just left un-burnt powder blowing out the muzzle... and groups rather mediocre...
The step up to Palma cases made a real difference as previously I had used US military match brass that worked well but not as well as the Palma.
BTW: I was using 168gr Hornady A-Max

Small Rifle Magnum or BR primers have thicker cups, not more power in general.
