Just wondering what you think on best barrel lenghts and profile for say 300 500 as I think shorter fatter barrels give less vibration and follow through sighting ? And nominating shots?

As for profile for F class with its generous weight limits, I would go for a straight 1.25" diameter all the way. The only reason I would ever go for smaller diameter is if lower weight limits dictated it (as in Fly Light Gun). If I am allowed 10kg, I would always try to get the weight up close to the limit and extra meat in the barrel will always be welcome, as long as your gun does not become to front heavy.
As for lengths, whatever length will make weight (as long as you have a long enough fore end for the gun to balance well). E class doesn't require the absolute accuracy which BR or Fly needs so may as well get as long as you can to keep weight up near 10kg and give you opportunity for another rechamber or two if you like to go that way. If you have a more old school stock with short fore end, then I would limit barrel length to around 28" and put any extra weight allowance into the rear of the stock to keep the gun from being too nose heavy.

Re: Best barrel lenght in 6mm
FWIW I run all my 6mm barrels (BRX, Creed and Dasher) at 26inch.
Mainly competing on targets at 300-700m
If chambering was 6BR I'd add 1-2"
Google barrel length versus MV, you'll find some guys have put a bit of time into real world testing.
Standard is you lose about 25fps per inch chopped with a sweet spot on most 6mm and 6.5mm at 26inch.
My 26" barrels using standard(not stupid hot) loads realise MVs around
2900fps for 105s out of BRX and Dasher
3000fps for say 107s out of 6Creed
As above and depending on what you are doing with setup, heavy profiles like MTU and Proof Competition are my go to as I'm seeking lots of weight forward to balance rifle and help with self spotting.
Barrel builds as above using quality like Bartlein will shoot way better than my wind call every single day.

See bias towards 26" length here (where basically everyone is using 6mm and some 6.5mm)

What RDavies said if for F class. I'd run a 1.250" str. or if you want a tapered barrel a HV down to a 1" muzzle. Some believe a tapered/contoured barrel shoots better than a straight/no tapered barrel. I've found no proof of that.
If running a 6BR type case...28" finish length. No need to go longer...your not going to gain anything for the most part past 28".
If 6 Creedmoor or a 243win type case....I'd go 30".
No slower than a 8 twist for up to 108gr type bullets.
5R for rifling and standard .237" bore. No tight bore on the 6mm's.

Very interesting But I was wondering just how short you can go to shoot back 1000yds ? as once I shot a 75.13 at 1000yds with a 24 3/4 inch 223 with 80gnrs
full bore target then
it was a state team practice at Maryborough
I was coaching all day and wanted to try it after we finished and was surprised
wind was from 1 right to 3 right so not a lot in it crazy

I'm currently building a 6mm ARC after seeing the tight groups the guy's in the states are shooting at 1000yards with 18 inch gas gun.Chopper wrote:Very interesting But I was wondering just how short you can go to shoot back 1000yds ? as once I shot a 75.13 at 1000yds with a 24 3/4 inch 223 with 80gnrs

I went with a 26 inch 1 in 7 twist 1 inch straight taper. Hopefully have the 108's at around 2900fps.
Hoping for this to be the do it all rifle out to the magic mile.

My newly built 6 creed gets 3020 from 27” during fireforming loads using 105 scenar-L / 2209 , easily no pressure , reached the mile no probs
