Minimum length grip on projectile

#1 Postby Rogue22 » Thu May 19, 2022 10:23 am

Looking for a bit of advice on what the minimum length of projectile bearing surface needs to be in the neck of the case for a single shot target rifle.
My current rig has a 1:11 bartlein which is throated long for 155 Scenar-Ls, I’d like to put a Berger 185 juggernaut load together for F/TR.
I found the jam with the jugs this morning and then seated the projectile another 0.010 in, there is currently about 2.6mm of bearing surface in the neck compared to 3.4mm with the Scenars.
Is this enough or just stick with the Scenars?

Juggernauts are on the left in the photo.

I would say yes plenty of bullet in the neck, done that myself and I know of other shooters that have the same.

What's in the neck is not nearly as important as having the correct jump. My daughter is shooting 155.5s from a barrel throated for 200+ projectiles (1/3rd of an inch of freebore) There might be a mm of bearing surface in the neck but not much more. She just came second in Fstd B at the NQ Queens so there's nothing wrong with the load.
You're single loading from the box not driving them out of a magazine. As long as the case holds the projectile, you're good to go.

Thanks for the advice guys, and I saw your daughter shoot Tim and she did really well!

Looks like I’ve got some work to do this weekend!

Hope you get the 185s going good.. I didn't have much luck with them and gave up.. Only to find out I didn't have them moving fast enough.
Might see F/TR on the Clermont program next year!

Hey Dave, talking to Bennie yesterday and we are about to order the medallions for next year which will definitely include FTR at Clermont.

I’ve run them pretty well in my TRG at 2710 with only 44.5gr 2208 out of a 26” barrel, was hoping to get at least 2800-2850 in this rifle.

What speed did you have them running at?

The best group I got was at 44.4 of 2208 and only 2740fps. I only went as far as 44.6gn. Started to run out of room for powder so I gave up. I was looking for alternatives if I couldn't get 200gn pellets. Funny thing is now I'm looking for anything that might work in my chamber.

A few other shooters who use them said I wasn't pushing them fast enough. Maybe someone on here that uses them can give you some pointers.

I might have to do what Tim did for Phoebe. I have some 155s that hang in about 100 thou of neck.

Looking forward to getting down in July for your shoot..

Hey Dave,

Had a play around yesterday and went from 44.6 up to 46.2 with still room in the case for a bit more. Only got up to 2810 fps which was a bit slow I thought. I think my magnetospeed is reading under though so may be a little more, will verify with the lab radar when I get a chance.

Ended up setting at 45.8 as all 5 shots were a little clover and SD was good.

Will give them a run next weekend, looks promising though as they shot a lot better at 100 then the Scenars.

Juggs work well from 2800 and above , and not super fussy on seating I had them in a .200 freebore chamber 1:12tw Krieger and it hammered enough to win a SA queens and 4th in NZ National queens

Only need enough to make it seat “true” and not fall out on the way to the chamber.

You might be close now you are over 2800 as Cheech has said above.
I dug up the old test targets and I was getting 1/2 moa groups even at the lower speed. The 200gn shot 0.3moa at the starting load I was recommended by the gunsmith so I stayed with them. Still use the same load.
