So after a work induced sabbatical from rifle shooting, I have decided to come back and take the opportunity to transition from TR to f-class. FTR looks like my thing. As the only scope shooter in my club I need some external help to transition, so any advice is appreciated.

My current setup is a Neilsen MN600 with a TR stock (and bag rider), Sightron 10-50x60, Davies standard bipod, fluted Lawnton 30" 1:12. Package weight is 8.20kg.

In the medium term I want to use this rifle until I build something up with a Barnard P action that is currently gathering dust.

First question is regarding projectiles/barrel. The barrel on the Neilsen action is only a few hundred rounds old so I would rather modify than bin it. Should I just shoot this setup as is for now with 155gn projectiles or extend the throat for the heavy stuff I am reading about on this forum? What can I do with a 1:12?

Hi Ryan,

When I started out in FTR I was launching 175's from a barrel very similar to what you describe, I would consider starting here, not only to slowly adjust to the heavier recoiling loads, but also to save a few bucks while you try things out. Also, the heavy stuff, 185's-200's are hard to come by at the moment, shoot what you have got, build up a supply then get your next barrel.

Just my thoughts, hope it helps a bit.

The suggestions from Jasmay are good,probably I would try to use heavier projectiles,185 Berger Juggernaughts if you can get them,or 190 Sierra Match Kings,providing your throating of your barrel will allow it.Ultimately you will realise that barrels need to be changed quite often and once you get into 200grain projectiles you will stay there.Today with shortages of imported projectiles it is a nightmare to work up a load and then continue with it,as the favourite projectiles may not surface for months.Those with a big cheque book can order a bulk lot,the rest take the crumbs.

Later this year I will build a new rig with my spare Barnard. I have an aluminium F-Class stock on my drawing board that hasn't seen daylight yet, so this will be a good excuse to finish this design. I think I do need to strip some weight out of it for a FTR version though. I will post some screenshots soon for comment.
