Hi All,
Just planning ahead for a possible FTR build.
The carbon fibre wrapped barrels interest me, so if the weight isn't an issue what would be the ideal barrel length?

Most people (myself included) shooting F/TR here is SA run 32" barrels with 30" being the shortest. I run just a bit heavier than a heavy varmint and I have mates who run parrellel stuff. You would probably be fine running something shorter, but not sure how much speed you would lose if you were to use a 26-28" tube.

We Run 33 inch in FTR 31mm Parellel. But we have 30 inch in a varmint profile as well and they work just fine.

Hi Tim, I am running a Krieger 1:11 twist 31" barrel #15 profile (standard palma). Weight is 2.36 kilos.
I would have preferred a 1 in 10 but none were available when I was setting up.
You need to watch your weight. It doesn't take much for your rig to reach 8.25kg.
I am looking for team members for SA in 2017, are you interested?

Tim im running a 30 inch 11 twist heavy varmint #17 profile krieger. It weighs 3.62kg.

Weight with a nightforce br total is only 7kg.

I contacted Proof Research some months ago with no answer to date!
Suggested they could make inroads into F/TR if they would at least make a 30".
They top out at 28" currently in .30 cal

I think you are right if they made longer barrels there would be a market in FTR.
See someone won something major in the US recently with a carbon barrel.

Wow!!! That means we will all need carbon barrels to be competitive!!!!!

Then again I recall Wild Dog uses Maddco barrels & they don't run beyond 30".

And now Borden in the USA have announced a 1/2 pound Ti action sans bolt!!!

Anyone tried rimfire BR, its a bunch of fun and the barrels last about 10 times as long

I propose a .22rimfire 200yd FTR comp....

Not sure if the titanium action would be strong enough for max loads
I know of one in use that wasn't happy when used at the upper end

I think the titanium actions do have a place in F/TR. The titanium actions do not fare so well with magnum cases due to the thinner wall thickness in the chamber tenon as well as the extra bolt thrust of the magnum case head. With the thicker tenon with a 308 case and less bolt thrust, I have heard the titanium actions are more viable. I know I am looking into a 308 bolt for mine.

Most of us here in NZ are running 32" to 30". I heard the poms are running ultra long 34"-35"
