I think brass options are a bit skinny at the moment Andrew - Once Lapua roll it out I'm sure someone will try but I haven't heard of any US guys running it in Open. Seems to be more of a high velocity PRS calibre.

I know they said 6.5 saum was not too bad on barrels because they were using really slow powders, but if there was a similar round with good brass i'd be willing to try a barrel (or two ) The lower recoil and torque might give this some good accuracy .....

not sure of the case capacity of this round.
if it approaches or exceeds the 6.5x284, talk to some of the fclass old timers about barrel life.
strangely enough, most but not all 6,5x 284s shot their best with 2209, a powder that was too fast burning to give full ballistic capability.
the 6.5 super lr seems to be about the optimum balance for a 6.5 long range rifle, closely followed by the 6.5x55 in std form.
and these often run at only 30 to 50 fps slower at accuracy level than the bigger cases.
for hunting you don't need the sheer accuracy required in fclass, max speed with reasonable accuracy being preferable.
here the bigger cases shine, but are not in the same league as bigger 7mms

Lapua has already done it, Cleavers advertise stock, I was hoping they would do saum instead but no luck, I believe it's almost the same as 6.5X284 capacity just shorter for mag compatibility, but no direct knowledge

Only when loaded to low pressure with slow powder, George Gardner logged a few over 3000 rounds with H1000 (2217) loaded sub 50000, but that is also practical shooting not Fclass

You sure as heck would not get good barrel life with 2209. I use a compressed load of 2213 in my 6x47 , so I would probably try 2217 in the 6.5 PRC. Call me foolishly optimistic...

PS. When I tried a 6.5x284 I was getting loose primer pockets after one or two firings so I wont go near that brass again.

We have a shooter with a tactical one at our club.
It has a 26 inch barrel and sends down 147 pills pretty fast from my memory. I think it was hi 2900 FPS from memory.
His research on the factory rounds he is using that cost nearly the price of a house was that they used 2217.

It Will be interesting when I start to help them with the reloading.

My main interest in this case for F-Open would be necked up to 7mm. Magnum case head, Lapua brass, short fat case, capacity probably slightly more than 284, what's not to like? If there was one minor quibble, it would be neck length on the short side (compared with the 7 SAUM), but it does tick a lot of boxes.

alan, what about the 277 sig case with steel case heads.
it can apparently be loaded to 80.000 psi.
that would let you go to the next node up!

Really all that's needed is Lapua quality Saum cases for less than $18 per case, bout a dollar would be nice

The trouble is, Lapua brass may be hard to get, but that would be nigh on impossible! Anyway, being on a classification range I wouldn't want the next node, just good case life at 3500ft-lb.
