F-Open Calibre Poll - Short Range

Note there are 3 polls. This one is for short ranges (up to 600 yards). So if you must choose two different calibres to use at a Queens shoot, what would you use at the shorts? Please base your choice on what you would recommend to others and I know its hard, but try not to be biased in favour of what you have.

Something I said in an earlier thread and should have included here :

AlanF wrote:It isn't just asking for the most economical, the best theoretical performance, the easiest to load for, the easiest to get components for, or even the best recent performances. Its more of an assessment of all aspects, and what you would recommend for an F-Open shooter on an average budget with a reasonable amount of time on their hands who wants to be competitive at Queens level. It does need to be a proven calibre in Australia, and needs to take into account current realities, including the SSRs, the situation with ME limits, and component shortages etc.

Now here's something new with this poll - you can go back and change your choice. Your former choice will be removed from the count when you do that. So not only can you change it after further thought now, these polls will remain for you to access in future, to change if your opinion changes. Also if new (or old) calibres not in the choices become popular, then I may put them in the list in place of ones without votes. So this can become an ongoing and up to date guide.

BTW it wasn't working initially, so try again now if you want to change.

I found the 6.5 Super more versatile over all ranges out to 900m. Lapua 123 grn. out to 600m. and the 139 grn. Lapua out over the longs. Different powders and loads of course.

How do you post a vote?

Norm,

This poll was started in June 2015 and for some reason has "re-ignited". You can only vote once so maybe you voted back in 2015? If you did, then Submit Vote won't change anything (I think).

I notice that the graph at the top has my choice highlighted by virtue of the cartridge name & percentage being shown in bold while the balance are in a faded font.

Do you see a cartridge highlighted the same way that might have been your choice then?

Yes John, thanks for pointing that out. I have the same thing, the percentage is bold, but on my monitor at least, the cartridge name is not highlighted.

No mention of a 6.5x47 Lap Imp, hold 2 more grains of 2208, runs a 140 gr VLD at target impact at a 1000 yard of 1600fps from a 28" barrel and good case life?

25-06, 25 souper, 6.5-06. The 25-06 is at least a standard round available readily to new shooters in factory offerings such as the Remington 700 long range. This is a heavy barrel rifle similar to the sendero but half the price and would make a good entry point for a new to f class shooter. There's the age old argument about projectiles in that caliber but if researched there's actually a reasonable selection available and there are up to 120 grainers with reasonable bc available from many manufacturers. Everything says it should work out to 800 m on targets and a 117 grain projectile should be supersonic to 1000 m.

243 should be fine also for short range.
