Someone at my club is swapping his 6.5-47 barrel for a 308 to shoot F/TR. He has a Barnard S in a tube type stock and I'm recommending he go for a 32" 1 in 10 barrel. The question is what profiles are being used? The weight needs to be about 2.7Kg maximum to get under 8.25Kg total. Is a straight taper generally recommended or better to go PALMA style to get a bigger muzzle diameter?

I am confused, how does a Palma end up with bigger muzzle than a straight?

I was originally using heavy barrels, with the lighter weight limit balance is tough, my new barrel (yet to be fitted) is a 7WW Maddco, should come in just under 3kg @ 32" I plan on lopping this off to around 29" also, as I have a few theories that seem to be paying off for slightly shorter barrels.

1:10 is a good place to be.

If you have a straight taper vs a PALMA of the same weight and length, then the PALMA will have a bigger muzzle diameter, because it has a smaller diameter forward of the "step". What it loses in weight in one place it must gain in another.

I think the confusion is that some refer to a "Straight Taper" profile, when talking about "Straight Cylinder" profile barrels. While others refer to "Straight taper" barrels when talking about HV or LV Varmint profiles.

I am considering switching from F-Open to F/TR due to the crap that is going on in F-Class at the moment.
As such I will be going with a LV profile barrel. Its a simple matter to run a barrel weight calculator over the profile to get what you want with regard to weight. In my opinion, the LV profile is stiffer than a Palma profile.

A bit off track but. The crap I refer to is the boycotting of Queen’s prize shoots by F-Class shooters as a reaction to what the NRAA has decided to do to them.
Not saying that they are wrong, but what’s the point of spending heaps on a couple of F-Open rifles and travel etc, when no one is going to turn up at a Queens to compete against? May as well leave them in the safe for now and concentrate on shooting F/TR until things settle down.
F/TR is much closer to my core form of shooting. I can at least use it as practice for that on a local level, and at the same time support a developing discipline that I am starting to find interest in.

I'm only advocating a boycott as a last resort, better to look at less damaging ways of skinning the cat. But the Queens badge issue (and what it represents) is something that does effect ALL categories of F-Class including F/TR. I don't think F/TR shooters want to play second fiddle to TR any more than F-Std or F-Open.

To get back to your original question Alan - 30" Palma profile and 34" fluted Krieger barrels both get me under weight with either Davies or RPA Quadlock actions in traditional timber stocks with a bipod of unknown manufacture similar to the Davies.

I am using a 1:11 twist Pac nor heavy Palma at 31" it works for me

My Shilen Palma comes in at 2.825 with 31" What's 125g work in inches?

Oops - just reread Alan's original post and he wanted barrel weights. 32" palma profile 2.3kg 34" fluted 2.45kg
