Wilson trimmer case holder

My trimmer arrived today and the case holder too. Sadly the only one in stock at BRT was a 6.5x284/284 that doesnt fit the shehane case.

So I will have to get my reamer run into the case holder. Now I think I know the answer but I thought I would put this out there.

Is it possible to use the reamer and turn it by hand in the case holder to take that little bit more steel out to fit the shehane case? It seems to be a really small amount of metal to take out.

if the reamer cuts out of alignent the necks wont be square when you trim.

Brad, I use the Wilson trimmer for trimming cases and got the Sinclair micrometer version with the carbide cutter. For inside reaming on the Shehane I use the Forster trimmer and inside reamers.

I have sets of both but for reaming the Forster is the best and also does not require case holders. It would be nice if one tool did the lot but I find it rarely works out that way in the quest for accuracy. The Forster also comes with a crank handle which is much better than the Wilson knurled knob.

As you already know the 284W Wilson fired case holder fits the Shehane cases, just thought I would mention it again in case others are wondering.

My 7 Shehane case holder for Wilson trimmer came direct from Wilson. It is marked 6/6.5/284 with "Shehane" crudely hand engraved underneath, so they must have reamed it as you intend to do. I would get it done on a lathe to be safe. As a guide, fired cases protrude from the holder about 0.375" at the head end when snug. I also have a non-Shehane version of the holder for 6.5-284 and this protrudes the same amount.

Brad if the shoulder of the reamer starts to contact and cut before the pilot gets centered it will chatter and ruin your holder. I would only do this in a lathe if you did want to try it!!!

Yeah from everything I could find about the wilson ones you had to get the fired case version of the 284 holder and it would accept a shehane. But stuart and annie only had the normal one. Will take it to the shop next week and have the holder reamed with the chamber reamer to suit the case.

Hi Brad
I use wilson trimmers and very happy with them.
The only issue I had was my 223 case once fire formed did not extend far enough out if the holder to trim
The solution was to have my gunsmith use the same reamer as my chamber and turn it out by hand but using a lathe.
All it took was about 8 turns by hand rather than starting the lathe and all good
The runout is fine and now the cuts are nice and square

Hi Peter. Good to hear it can be done by hand. Im having my gunsmith do it very slowly in a lathe so its 100% right when he also does a recrown on a barrel for me. Should be cutting donuts thursday night.
