After the 5th shot, and halfway home at the 1st 800 mtrs, I was thinking "Ive got this place worked out"........and then my wheels fell off......how bloody humbling

Tony, I spoke to Kelvin when he got home. He described Canberra in a similar way to your description. I just can't put the actual words on here though. Alan would frown on me

Are you sure it's not you attracting the wind mate. It was pretty calm at Warwick while you were away

Actually Canberra was mild to what I have seen at past Queens, tricky non the less and a real test of wind reading capabilities. For most of the Queens wind came from 12.30 to 1.30 at zero to 3.5 right. Occasionally a little more or less.
Get out of step with it and you suffered--- yeah, heartbreaking would aptly describe it.
But that's Canberra - and heaven knows why, but we keep going back.

Yes I've been to more ACT Queens than any other for less success than any other. The only year I won, was after coming dead last in the leadup! Afterwards I was none the wiser about why. You could say that Canberra likes to share its favours widely.

Canberra is an Aboriginal word 'Wind in many directions", where as up on Capital Hill it means "Hot air rises" Maybe they got it confused when they decided to put the Nation's capital there. Great pictures though

Etymology

The word "Canberra" is popularly thought to derive from the word Kambera or Canberry which is claimed to mean "meeting place" in the old Ngunnawal language, one of several Indigenous languages spoken in the district by Aboriginal people before European settlers arrived.[5] According to Ngunnawal Elder, Don Bell, the correct translation is "woman's breasts" and is the Indigenous name for the two mountains, Black Mountain and Mount Ainslie which lie almost opposite each other.[6] In the 1860s, the name was reported by Queanbeyan newspaper owner John Gale to be an anglicisation of the indigenous name 'nganbra' or 'nganbira', meaning "hollow between a woman's breasts", and referring to the Sullivans Creek floodplain between Mount Ainslie and Black Mountain.[7]


Maybe it is those two "Lady Lumps" that have been giving us all the problems

If we had spent more time concentrating on shooting and less on "Canberra", we may have improved our score?
