7mm-6.5x55AI for The Longs?

Hey all,

Just had a thought. Given that 6.5x284 brass is hard to get, I was wondering if a 7mm version of the 6.5x55AI would be equal in performance? Would the case capacities be similar if not the same?

Cheers.

or the 7x57 Ackley - similar capacity.
or the 280 Ackley - just that bit better again.

Been there thought of that the case capacity of the 55, 57 is about 4 grains of H2o less than the 284, but with the better case design you maybe able to run higher pressure and get similar velocity, or run the 162/168 type bullet at higher velocity.

Matt and Bruce,

Thanks. I was thinking of running the 180gr weight bullets at 284 speeds it alike. Was just a thought....

Gents,

Question from my father in law, any one have any data for a 6mm version if the 6.5x55? He's considering one as a FO rifle. Cheers.

PS, didn't want to start a new thread for such a similar topic.

6.5x284 cases are listed as available on the Q store/shootenstuff website. Even then there are nosler custom and hornady cases available. A bit more prep needed but might be a short term fix. Bob K has been running prepped remington cases in his SAUM and it shoots unreal.

And for 6mm version of 6.5x55 you should find it on the web somewhere just google it, Better sticking with the 6.5 and run 130 or 140 bullets though.

Brad,

Those Lapua cases they're listing are the ones I bought (& regretted), lot P00620601.

I take it they are the soft ones? I just picked up some from a mate in Perth a week back that he bought way back when blue boxes were fairly new and going by the lot number, they are from a much older batch. Fingers crossed they handle being run as 284S well. He even primed them for me too!

I would like to know if anyone has tried running nosler custom or hornady cases necked up and prepped for uniformity. Wouldnt be a bad idea for club cases if you wanted to save good lapuas for matches.

Brad,

I've looked online. Can't find much at all. We have been discussing it all day. We may have another FO shooter in WA if he decides to get into it.

Honestly mate, tell him to stay with the 6.5mm. A new 8 twist and 130 bergers and he will be dangerous.

I think the Nosler and Hornady are made by Norma (very uniform BUT, in the past have also been on the soft side), but could be worth a try, just treat them gently to start with.

I will Matt, never had good experiences with nosler brass in 22-250 but I figure run some 168's and take it easy on them to see how they go first.

John,

They are also the ones I bought and DIDN'T regret it :D . I used them at the FCWC and found them about the same as any other batch. In fact when I was doing velocity comparisons between Australian & US powder batches, one ladder ended up at 3033fps, and the primer pocket seemed okay next time I primed it.

Brad, his hunting rig is in 6.5x55SE, he's considering a 6mm for FO. Maybe the 6x47L or similar.

I tell ya what though, the 6.5x55 cases with hornady 129gr SST looks sexy as hell. Makes me want one....
