Based on the experiences of fellow match rifle shooters, I suspect that you'll need to go to something around the 185-190 grain mark to do much better than a good 155 grainer.

I am going to work up a load with 170gr Lockbases in my 308, they have a advertised bc .525. I also am going to try some 185gr bergers aswell.

That would be G1 BC right? Maybe quote the G7 as this is a better match to the low drag projectiles we mostly use.

I like the Lapua D46 projies, and will try them out myself.

Rod,

The dont have an advertised g7 bc from what i know and they are not in litz's book either so all I have to work from is the g1.

Been meaning to do some load work with Alan.
But I've been busy with work so not even able to normal shoots.

I've got a bunch of rounds loaded up for ladder testing with Berger VLD's, I think they are 168 gr's?.

Have been testing Berger Hybrids, 155 and 168 gr in a 12 twist 308 with very nice results.

The 168s have G1/G7 of 0.519 0.266 respectively... not too bad for a 30cal... will be using these in my 308 for f open until my 260 rem arrives...

The 185 figures are 0.549 0.281 but it says 11 twist minimum :(

maybe ill have to get a 300 wsm :)

I know it doesnt matter much for F-Class but I was doing the first round of my load dev of my 170gr Lapua Lockbases, got a 3 shot one hole group under 0.25MOA at least at 100yds (havent measured it yet) but I will be testing this load at 300m on thursday arvo to see how viable it is for F-Class use. Load Was:

Lapua 170gr Lockbase FMJBT (G1 BC .525/unsure of G7)
Lapua 308 Brass
44.4gr 2208
CCI BR2
2.800 OAL

Im going away from F-Std (getting tired trying to find a good 155gr load for my shorter 26" barrel with good accuracy and velocity) and probably going to focus on F/TR and FO :)

I have 500 of these projies coming and will probably also pick up some Berger 185gr LRBTHP as well to try out.

You might want to include the Berger 168gr Hybrids on your list to try especially in a 26" barrel. They have a high BC with G7 = 0.266 and G1= 0.519. I have found them to work really well with 2208 so maybe worth getting a box to try!

Ian,

I'll think about it. I got these 170gr Lockbases for a good price so Ill use these up first but may get a box of Bergers to try out too at some stage.

If I get these lockbases humming along well, I may just stick with them as they should be a good field shooting round as well as decent F/TR load.

The very first load I tried with my new F-std/F/TR rifle with a 13" twist was with 168 Hybrids. They shot very very well at 900yds even with the 13" twist. This was when the weather was warmer, but these projectiles might be something to try for others with 13" twist barrels if you live in the warmer areas (less dense air, more stability) and want to try a slightly heavier bullet.

Update on my F/TR load dev:

My 44.4gr 2208, 170gr Lockbase load shoots well at 400m. Got a good group at 400m for 3 shots, enough to tell me that the elevation of the load is good. Will chrony this weekend. Final test will be at Swanbourne at the 900yd club shoot this saturday. Hopefully it shoots nice at 900yds and if so, its what I will take to the WA Queens and shoot F-Open with :)

I had very good results with the 170 Lockbase and N140 followed by N540 then all of a sudden the 170LB was no longer available so I went back to the 155 Scenar.

Now the 170 is back in the UK I am tempted to try it with the TR140 powder (speed is somewhere between N140 and N150) The LB's worked well with a small jump however there was one small problem with them.. Very occasional flyers, maybe only 1:30 but enough to make me doubt my shooting ability, followed by reloading followed by the rifle etc. Moving to the 155's was the end of the odd flyers for me, well other than when I call them.

Despite that I still think the 170 is a very good bullet at longer distances.
