I shoot a 7mmWSM with a Mauser action and Palma heavy 31" barrel sitting in a Richards benchrest thumbhole stock with 3.25" fore-end. This set-up weighs 7.5 kilo and I am unsure where to add weight to bring it closer to 10kg. Any ideas or rules-of-thumb??

1st up what do you want to use this rifle for , if its 500 fly and 1000 yd BR your fore end is fine and a light gun weight limit of 7.711 kg. but for F open you need a 3 inch fore end and a 10 kg limit . my 7mm rifle has a s/s 3 inch plate running full length of fore end that i also bolt a 6 inch sled to for heavy gun BR work and also a weight system in the butt to balance the rifle . balance point for me is just in front of the recoil lug . i also run long stocks to tame the big magnums recoil and stop that lift out of the front bag. hope this helps .

any discipline resting on bags works well with 2/3 of the weight on the front bag, & 1/3 on the rear bag for good tracking and control.

The rifle is for F open from 300 to 1,000 yards.

bruce moulds - how do I work out how much weight is already up front compared to behind the action? If I find the balance point how do I then find the weight fore and aft?

Heavy barrels and weights in the butt of the stock is more than likely the go.

The weight of my barrel, action, barrel block and stock is already in the vicinity of 7.5-8kg. Have scope and rings to add into that and trigger guard plus any weight added during the painting process of the stock.

After choosing a calibre, the rest of my building has been aimed at keeping the weight as close to 10kg as possible. Fingers crossed that barrel gets fitted over the next few days.

My barrel is 31" Palma Heavy profile made by TSE with the following measurements from the PacNor site:
Heavy Palma
1.230" - shank
.925" - after step down
.925" - muzzle
5" - straight barrel containing chamber
7.5"- from receiver to end of step down
31" - finished length
They give the weight for the barrel as 2.90kg.

Im running 1.25" straight for 30 inches See how that sucker goes heating up.

Added just over 2 kilo of lead shot, mainly to the fore-end. Improved recoil markedly - no more recoiling high and left! Rifle is now just under 10 kilo. Accuracy was excellent also.

Awesome. A guy here just bought a 6.5mm barrel for a 6.5x47L in a standard palma profile. Im sure if I hadnt of told him, he would have built it to 7.5kg and had a 1kg trigger weight. I dare say he will be doing something similar.

If you can go up to 10kg you might as well- especially in larger cals that can recoil a bit.

Hey 6shooter, the width and contact dimension of the forestock/front rest are given here on page 91. http://www.nraa.com.au/pubs/SSRs.pdf

The width cannot exceed 76.2mm (3") it looks like your 3.25" forestock may need a little sanding to bring it into compliance with the SSRs. Just a heads up so you are aware of the rule!

Thanks for that - attacked the fore-end with the sander while I was adding weight to it.
