Does anyone here have a Savage F/TR? I am considering buying one for use in F-Class Std, 500 Fly and Benchrest, and would like to know if it is worth selling my Tikka to buy one.

Yes, no doubt that the Tikka shoots well, I was investigating to see if the F/TR is going to be a good upgrade, especially considering that it isn't overly expensive. I have heard some great reports about the F/TR, some people have reported getting 1" groups at 500 yards - I doubt that the Tikka would do that, even if I was capable of that sort of accuracy.

The F/TR is designed and built as a target rifle, with the additional weight and that big 30" barrel, it does seem to be a good choice, but I would be interested to hear from anyone who has one or has used one.

I have competed against a few savage f/tr and they shoot well.I haven't seen one do a 1" at 500 yet but that may have been the drivers.
As a matter of interest I haven't see too many rifles do 1" at 500 yards.

Shooting 1" at 500yds would obviously have alot to do with the shooter. I am not good enough to shoot that sort of accuracy. Apparently the guys in the Team USA comp team who use the Savage rifles (aka Team Savage F/TR) regularly shoot 0.6" at 300yds, that is very impressive for a factory rifle which costs less that $2000.

I am thinking that the F/TR and a Nigthforce NXS scope would be a good combo, but it is a big investment (around $4000) so I want to make sure I am spending wisely. I have a Leupold 8.5-25x50 at the moment, and I am in two minds about whether to sell that and go to the Nightforce or keep it.

Check the relative weights out before you go the Nightforce route. It weighs substantially more than the Leupold & if your rifle is getting towards the limit a NF could tip you over.

Remember the weight limit for an FS rilfe is 8.5 kg.

The rifle is 12.65lbs (5.75kg), the NF NXS 8-32x56 is 34oz (around 1kg) so it should be pretty right, especially considering I would be using a front rest rather than a bipod.

Where did you find the weight of an FS rifle as being 8.5kg. That is not correct for either FS, F/O or F/TR. The FS weight is 8kg according to the rules.

Thanks guys, I reckon that the F/TR is probably a good way to go, now to decide whether I go with the Leupold I already have or invest in a Nightforce....

I would suggest you keep the Leupold and try that out, it is a good start, as compared to a new rifle/action and also a new scope, as per just a new rifle/action and a scope you already have. Just a suggestion.

Slow down and have a think about these USA team Savage shooters and their use of factory rifles and barrels, would it not occur to you, that the armourers would change rifles and barrels,until they found a world beater. No offence meant to Savage, but you or I take what we get, probably quite good too, however an organisation as big as Savage is going to get its shooters on the line with the absolute best.
Discussing telescopic sights is as dangerous as commenting on your neighbours sheep dog, my thoughts however are, how can this new brand X scope improve my scores, if it wont, why bother,better to spend your money on travelling and entry fees, you will enjoy yourself and the experience should improve your shooting.
