Ok what brass is the best. Lapua or Win?
Only problem is most chambers are cut for Lapua brass, Win brass is smaller, thus a tad loose on 1st firing. Does Win brass have more capacity
What about longevity

I have only used the Lapua brass and have found it quite to my likeing.
My first 284 barrel has fired just over 2000 rounds and some of the cases have been fired around 10 times without any issues. Primer pockets are still firm. I only neck size and occasionally bump the shoulder. Use mild loads on the first firing.
A mate uses Winchester brass with success. Only thing is he got onto an old batch in the plain white box. Not too sure about the new offerings from Winchester.

apparently the old white box winchester stuff is even more uniform than the new lapua cases.

Yep, the 6.5-284 Lapua does vary. Variations in wall thickness need to be checked. Some lots are really good though.

At the moment I am using .308 projectiles and will soon be getting a 7x284 barrel to play with. For the brass, can I just neck down the brass I have now for the .308 or is it a bit more involved than that?

Lee your talking about a 7/08 not a 284, totally different animal.

Lee 308, the 284 is built on different brass than the 308. It is both longer over all and .030" wider, being a rebated rim.
A 308 necked down will be a 7mm/08, still a good all round cartridge and one I will be trying sometime for the easier conditions.
Does anyone here think that the base of the brass being a thou or ten narrower than the chamber will harm things?

Plenty of people walk away from bigger mistakes... It'll look just like some of the brass i've seen come out of 7.62 chambers

Just gone 4000 rounds from 180pc Lapua brass Krieger rechambered for the 3rd time and just won 2 day OPM doesn't get much better than that.

I might now rechamber my first barrel. I was going to let it die on the original chamber.
