case length question

Post by btm_54 »

How do you measure the maximum length of a case for your rifle?
I brought a batch of Remington brass that has different case lengths and I wanted to find out how people measure their chambers to work out where the lip in their barrel is.
Thanks in advance

Easy to do but how to describe...

Trim the case neck back 80 thou then make a small plug with two diamaters to fit inside it. The smaller diameter is say .308 by half inch long and the greater diameter is the same as the external diameter of the neck by 50 thou long

Push the smaller diameter end into the neck, it should be a snug sliding fit leaving a bit sticking out, chamber the case and remove and the distance from the top of the plug to the base of case is you maximum case length.

I would take a picture of mine but it is not here right now. Perhaps some one will be along shortly to post a picture or offer a more worthy explanation.

Edit - a bit like this: http://www.varmintal.com/gagecl.jpg

This what I use : http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pid=32925/Product/Sinclair_Chamber_Length_Gage. Pro-Cal will probably have them.

The simple way ask whoever fitted your barrel for a drawing of the chamber reamer, could save a lot of time

I thought about getting in touch with the gunsmith.
He passed away. :(

What is the rifle chambered in? You may find some drawings of standard chambers on 6mmbr or try one of the reamer manufacturers

Those case length gauges work well.
They are not that expensive as well.

That's interesting, is a .270/08 based on a 7mm/08 which is a .308win necked down? I suppose the shoulder neck junction will move forward as the diameter decreases. What length are you new brass? Just curious
