weatherby vangaurd 243
Hi would like to get myself and the young bloke into fclass as he is slight of build was wondering if a weatherby vangaurd 243 would suit if it was rebarreled to 6.5 x 47L (if practical or possiable). As we come from .22 smallbore benchrest and still have a lot to learn about center fire rifles.
I plan to shoot out the 243 and go from there learning to reload and see if the recoil is to much for the young bloke.
As the shot show is in sydney soon was looking to get a good deal on a rifle fingers crossed, as the minister for war and finance has given me the go ahead on another gun.
All input welcomed.

thanks for for the thoughts, would a 223 be able to have a rebarrel job to a 6.5 x 47L without to much trouble . is it a case of have a gunsmith change the barrel and the bolt be ok or will it be a mammoth job or not relistic starting point, I'm looking to get a rifle that has the options of upgrading from the start.

Jinx,
Where will you be shooting? Do you know if there are other F-Class shooters there? Before buying anything I would talk to the F-Classers at the range. You need to talk about which class, which calibre, reloading, which scope, a sloping rail scope base etc. Regarding rifle choices, if you have at least $3000 to spend on the whole deal, one of the easiest ways into F-Open is the Savage 12F, a single shot purpose built target rifle available off the shelf. They are available in 6mmBR which is about as mild as recoil gets, and if our club one is any guide, they shoot as well as many custom built rifles.
Good luck with it.

Vanguard for F Class
Just a couple of things to consider when looking at a Factory Rifle for F Class:-
1. Is the STOCK suitable for shooting prone off bags / rest - bipod?
2. Can you easily purchase a 20 MOA tapered rail for scope mounting?
3. Is the trigger crisp & easily adjusted to 1 Kg (for F standard) or less (fo rF open)?
If the answer is NO, then look elsewhere.
Regards

thanks guys ,
mostly will be shooting around mid north coast nsw so Port Macquarie, Wingham, Seaham there all about the same distance from me but willing to travel. I'm in sydney for a week so will be doing the rounds of the gun shops and asking more questions looking poking that sort of thing. the main thing is I need to know what caliber to start with getting used to things and then do a barrel change, after reading some good post here 223 looks good but can it be rebarreled to 6.5 x 47L ? does the bolt face fit?
or am I on the wrong track all together was going to use 243w for other things then rebarrel for fclass standard or open don't matter which one as we are new to it all.Sorry for all the newbie questions you blokes must be sick of it all, but the wisdom from those that know is what keeps this sport going I guess.
The other thing is what distance is the most of the shooting done 300 600 1000 or is it all them?
Thanks again

Jinx,
I would tend to stay away from gunshops unless they're known to have expertise in F-Class shooting - the same applies to gunsmiths. I've seen many a newbie rock up at the range for the first time having bought or ordered gear that just isn't suitable. Don't rush into it - you'll get good advice on this forum, because if you get bad advice here, it tends to be corrected by others. However, there's nothing like going to a range and talking to shooters. I know a couple of shooters at Wingham who I'm sure would be good value : Steve Southwell shoots TR but has shot F-Class successfully, and Chris Burdett shoots both F-Classes very well.
As far as distances shot, it varies from range to range. All will shoot up to 600 yards or metres, and some will be longer, out to 1000yds. In fact there is a new range that goes to 1500yds at Coonabarabran.

Hi Jinx, A 223R bolt face wont fit a 308W derived case head like the 6.5x47L case. You would need 2 bolts for shooting 223R and 6.5x47L and its not too expensive if you go for something with a Remington 700 action. Quality replacement bolts are available for the Rem 700 actions from PT&G in USA for a very good price.
If you want to buy a cheap sporting rifle for hunting and F-Class maybe the Rem 700 actioned rifles are worth a look, with 2 barrels and 2 bolts you will have a start for where you want to go.
I prefer Alan's idea of buying a Savage F-Classer in 6mmBR and a second barrel will give you a 6.5x47L to shoot as well off the same bolt face!

just got back from talking to someone who shoots fclass and the info was what all you guys have been saying the savage fclass rifle in 6br if going straight into fclass works out the best option.
however it was suggested to go 223 and compete in 300mtr benchrest and 500 fly at first to get the hang of reloading and get my son introduced to longer distance and go along and play when fclass standard is at the shorter distances and the if he likes it shell out for the more expensive 6br savage and a good optics, by that time we will have a lot of the other gear to go with it.
will study up and talk other guys about the 223 options.
I would like to thank all of you for your time and input.
It's what got us into the sport the help and time others have shown to us and someday hope to be able to give back to others starting out.
Many thanks
