Speed

Post by Chris Burdett »

Whilst working up 6.5-6x47L I have reached an Av.2965fps with 39.2 gn. 2209. Accuratcy is good but how much higher can I go? Was hoping for 3050 or there abouts. It is hard to tell preasure signs in a Barnard(P) as I junked new .308 Lapua brass in one shot running up a Match rifle. At $1.60 a case for 6.5x47L I,m going gently. I read this site and some of the USA sites and they seem to have far higher speeds for the same powder charge than I can get. Your thoughts please.

Chris, the loads you are running are hotter than what a few of us other 6x47 shooters are using and we are getting 3050-3100 fps. I think the low velocity could be something to do with your crono. Did you use the crono at Wingham that we compared mine against a few months back? I know that one gives lower readings than the crono I took to Wingham.

Chris, are you trying 106gn Scenars?

If so, you may be able to up the powder charge.
The Scenars are undersize!

I've tried them in a 6BR, up to 32.5gns of '08 with no pressure signs, and pretty average accuracy.

They seem to work better in cut rifled barrels.(usually have a tighter bore)

YMMV

Cheers.

G'Day Chris,
Hall S SS action, maddco barrel, shooting moly'd 107gn SMK, with 39.5gn 2209, CCI450 primers and jammed 10 thou into the lands.

Based on come ups and the Infinity ballistic program its delivering around 3050fps. I've not chrony'd it.

I intend to test A Max's and copperheads.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the answers, Barrel is a cut Kreiger 1-8 I,m using 105gn. Lapua Scenars. The chroni is a new Ced M2 and side of it is a Olier(spelling)35 with 3 screens they read within 10fps of each other.
I,ll try a ladder up to 40gn. as I think it was Cameron who went that far.

Yeah Chris, I got to 40g. Go easy though, that was max for me. No extraction issues, only very slight enlargement of primer pocket. Those lapua cases are really tough.

Question 4 nedkelly

Post by jerryatric »

hi, sorry to highjack ya thread [ chris burdett ] , but i have a question for [ nedkelly ] . im about to try 107 smk,s in my 6.5x47 L - u state your using 39.5gr of 2209 // my question is - are u using magnum cci primers with that load .?. hope your kind enough to help or answer me . i have been using cci [ magnum ] primers behind 140 gr sierra,s & tiapans with around 38gr of 2209 with reasonable groupings but powder space is limited too much , hence why im going to try the 107s - hoping i can get more powder in & more velocity , not to mention better groupings . thankyou.

Chris,

You can get more powder in that case, I have loaded up to 41 grns of 2209 and 43 of 2213SC.
The 41 grn 2209 load is as hard as you want to go, the 2213SC was ok at 43 and cronyed 3040fps. 39.5 of 2209 on the same day cronyed 3070.
By the way I have only ever used Federal 205 primers and have had no problems with lighting up the powder even the 2213SC, so you dont need magnum primers at all.

Well did the test today, 39-40gn 2209 at the lowest es (probly 10-15 thou. into )best was 40gn. @3020fps no preasure signs es 1 st 7 group 3/4" high 3" wide hot windy day 600yds. That will do the Scenars (105) now the 105 VLD Bergers.
Thank you Cameron

Chris, I have a box of molied 105 Scenar silver tips, didnt work in my rifle, but might in yours. If you are after a bit more speed, these moly ones might help. If you want em you can have em to try.
