I've got a new batch of Lapua 284 brass that I'm preparing.
Beautiful shiny stuff, but I'm still turning the necks.

Out of 300 turned pieces I have found one dud that may not have been found if I wasn't turning. It seemed to have a lot of runout on spin up and on having a close look I found this:



Yes that's a hole right through the neck that wasn't visible until turning, I have never seen this before, but I'm glad I found it.

G'day All,
I bought some Lapua 221FB brass for a 20VarTarg project and in 1 box I lost 2 cases while neck turning,
There was a flaw in both that split the neck from mouth to shoulder.
I was using a slow speed drill and a simple catch on a flaw in the neck destroyed the cases.
Never seen it before in turning many varieties of cases and manufacturers.

More paranoia = More checking

I've just prepped 257 rounds of .284W brass, turned out to be a waste of time. Photo of case interior taken after 7 x firings.
When I used to just neck size, brass seemed to last indefinitely. I've got some Norma 308 cases that have seen better than 20x firings but were only ever neck sized and fired in a tight chamber.
This .284 brass has only been shoulder bumped but is now ready become 2 pieces of brass.
