Neck and body sizing What order ?

Post by macguru »

I have decided to go with a 3 die process for my 6.5PRC brass loading ... I bought a 2 die rcbs "hunting set", but I suspect its a bit rough on the necks so I now have:

1. A forster micrometer bullet loading die
2. A forster neck bump die with 291 collet
3. A Redding Body die (on the way)
This may be a dumb question, but.....
I understand you only do the body die occasionally, but when you do, is there a particular order ? they both look like they bump the necks, but in different areas (i have not tried yet, i dont even have the body die here)
Mainly in the past i have gone with redding 2 die sets...

cheers Andrew

You won’t be able to use a bump die the case expands rapidly. You will get 2 firings on new brass then you will have to full length size every time

Thats what I expect, to use both dies, i just wondered whether it mattered what order, probably not you are just splitting the 2 operations. I could not get a type S die but i am sure that does not matter as long as you resize the body as well, we will see

You need to do the body, then the neck/shoulder because body sizing is moving bulk metal and will move the shoulder.

You can check this yourself. Measure the shoulder position, body size, check the shoulder position again - it will have moved.

That said full length sizing, every time, with a 2 thou shoulder bump is the way to go.

You can look up Erik Cortina and full length sizing or just watch him ask a large number of the world's best shooters what they do at the 2018 NRA convention and then walking down the line at the USA F class nationals...

Spoiler Alert: Full length sizing is what the vast majority of top level shooters do.

Body Die,then neck size.A Redding Body Die is a Full Length die without the neck size and neck expander.

With the dies you have you would need to use the body die, then the neck die, then expand the neck after so not to pull the shoulder back forward.

Yeah thanks guys. I think resizing a 6.5prc means bumping the shoulder enough to avoid tight chambering. I am practising on a few I loaded a bit hot and they are holding up OK but I used my all in one rcbs die to its max (i dont have the redding body only die yet its on the way from the US). I am going to reload these 50 nosler cases a few times and see how they go but at least the case heads/primer pockets felt solid, not like the 6.5-284 I had once that loosened after 1-2 firings. (i could not find lapua brass for the prc)

A brand change of shell holder should fix that issue, the thickness of them is different across brands, I run both RCBS and Redding for different processes, ie priming, sizing and seating....

Andrew,
Get a case micrometer for your cartridge and a set of redding competition shell holders.

Steve G is on the right track. Measure your fired cases and change the shell holder until your sized case is the same as your fired case. Using different sized shell holder approach ensures your die is square and ensures a consistent sizing that fits your chamber. Also have a look at the Redding FLS bushing die. With the right shell holder it will be able to do all of your chosen steps at once.

So a shell holder that lets the body die get in further to the case to increase the bump ? got it, ill grab some if its necessary. I could not find a type S die that does it all for the prc, but i am happy to seperate the 2 operations so long as it all works :)

Andrew, BTW, a case micrometer measures the headspace length of the case.
