Press recommendations

Hi Guys,
I’m due for a new press as want to upgrade my existing Lee press that is very sloppy.
Not keen of coax costs but thinking around $500.

What can you recommend

I have no complaints about my RCBS Rock Chucker and note it was found to work very well vis a vis runout in this 14 press comparison on Ultimate Reloader.

The replacement for the Rock Chucker is the Rebel which looks even more solid.

Under no circumstances buy an RCBS Summit - the design is bad and they break.

For an “O” frame press , Aussie made Simplex . Last I looked they still make them new , strong and precise as anything else out there .

I have the new RCBS Rebel. It's built like a tank with no play. Produces very straight ammo like the Rock Chucker. $470 AUD including USPS International air freight to my door in Vic from Brownells U.S.A. I would always prefer to buy locally but the quote was $670 and none in the country at the time.

The RCBS Rebel is $465 from Cleaver. Don’t know about stock level as they advertise a lot of stuff they don’t actually have…

Which Lee press do you currently have?

I use the Lee classic cast and what I like about the press is the spent primer handling. The way the primer drop through the hollowed ram keeps everything clean.

Also I’m not convinced that a little flex and slop is a bad thing. I do use Redding competition shell holders and always have the shell holder contact the die.

Yeah right, have you had one? This was high up on my list.
I didn’t know the rebel was a replacement for the rockchucker, thanks for that!

Sounds like the same press, have had it for several years now. It seems to have heaps of sideways slop, maybe not a bad thing, not too sure.

My press in over 10 years old. If it still makes straight cases why change?

Rather than describe your press as having slop,consider it as self aligning,the dies are the important part.

I have a Rockchucker, which I later converted to take the Hornady Lock N Load bushings. I am happy with this setup and have no intention of ever buying another press. The way the Rockchucker handles spent primers is a bit archaic and a real put off. If I had to start over again. I would just purchase a Hornaday Lock N Load Press for its quality/value for money and ease of use. Die changing with the Lock N load is so easy and rapid it makes screw in dies obsolete. I was also very, very partial to the Redding T, 6 die turret press but didn't feel inclined to pay the price. The Lee Breech Lock system in the Classic Press is also quite good. Especially on a budget. As you have found out. Some Lee gear is quite good and some of it wears outs out a bit quicker. As far as dies go. I use a Redding Body die. Then a Lee collet neck size. Followed by a Wilson Seater. Not to say this is the best set up. But it works for me. As I measure concentricity at every stage.

Simplex were making them again. Think they were around the $400 mark for the master. Might be worth a look.
