Here is a very brief potted history of the NQ Queens held over the May Day weekend in Mackay. Only FS and FO details.

Weather - The lead up shoots (Marian and Mackay Annuals), StephensGriffiths and Queens were held in Glorious weather - except the last day. Double 800 m was shot in rain or half rain.

Attendance was very much up from the low of last year. This suggests a bumper year in 2008 when the Veterans will be held in Mackay as well.

Briefly, in the Queens, winners were

A - Helen Griffiths
B - J Kuchel
C - Jenny Barker
FO - Marty Lobert
FS - B Curley

All FO was shot on the old FO targets - probably will be the last Queens to do so. The new ones were not available in time.


The F standard was high. Details in the following pics.

The Champion of Champions in FO was a real tussle with Bill McLanachan winning with a magnificant shoot at 800m on his home range. Bill made up for Marty's 6 point lead in the first part of the COC.

Most shooters had their memorable highs - and forgettable lows as well.

It really was a great shoot. Southerners should consider coming to God's own country next year.

The Townsville shoot starts in about 2 weeks. In terms of F shooting this may be an even greater challenge.

I have saved the pictures and will do the results page later in the week. I see that you and John L had possibles at 600 - nice going. Any chance of getting some details of your gear (John too if you're reading this) so I can put them on the possibles page? And it seems that Marty Lobert's win at Brisbane was no fluke - very impressive scores!

Can anyone give a rundown of calibres used (by everyone if possible) in FO?

A few more details.

1/ The ranges shot were a mixture of yards and metres.
300y, 500y, 600y, 700y, 800m

2/ Marty's scores are definitely no fluke. He is moving to Brisbane/Sydney so some other shooters will also find this out. But it may be a little while before he gets organised and shoots down there.
He uses a 7 mm which shoots very well but wins by making few mistakes and reading wind extremely well.

3/ John Lorimer was involved in much of the organizing which probably effected his shooting to some extent after rushing down from the office to shoot.

4/ Some info on gear. This will be incomplete. Also some people shot different guns - or their stories about gear may not match what they shot.

other ranges a 7 mm (284)

John Lorimer 6.5 Swede Ackleyed
P Weber 6.5 Swede Ackleyed - same reamer as Johns. This was his
first big shoot.

Bevan Appleby 6 mm. I think he shot a Tubbs cartridge with 115 grain
projectiles but is
having trouble getting top performance from it.

Andrew Pearce. 6 BR - from memory standard.

Howard Simpson 6 mm - from memory a 243.

Kelvin Bell mainly a 6.5/284 from memory but occasinally used
something different
Christopher Bell mainly a 6.5/284

Bill McClanachan 6 BR - from memory standard.

Peter Smith 6.5 Rogue - essentially a 6.5x55 Ackleyed

John Smith 6 mm - not sure of exact case.

In the Marian annual a few days beforehand FS and FO shot togeather on FO targets. Greg Gardner - who later RO'd the Queens shot a 99 at 300 y with an FS rifle which in reality was probably better than the 100 shot by an FO shooter.

Was he using a .223?

Great info BTW. Good to see Kelvin Bell was there. Kel must surely get the prize for the most travelled F-Open shooter!

Greg Gardner used a 308 to shoot his 99. It was a rather ordinary looking rifle.

Another 308 (B Curley) managed 97 at the same range. In contrast his rifle would have looked quite in order at a benchrest shoot. He is a relatively new shooter and later went on to win the StephensGriffith and Queens FS with good scores.
Another quick learner I expect.
