I shoot a fairy heavy F STD rifle from a pedestal rest. It is fitted with a plate that slides on the rest, free recoil, with a gentle hand to steady things and not too much cheek or wrist pressure. That works well.

I have a harris bipod on there just to keep the thing out of the dirt when i put it down. BUT when you shoot from it you have to change technique, increase grip and lean into it a little to load up the bipod. No free recoil, a bit less accuracy. If i had and ftr style bipod though, i would definitely have slides on it ! They seem to work ok ....
