You are dead right, ultimately there has to be some evolution with gear and finally the rear bag is being questioned. Rear bags, packers etc etc have been in existance far longer than the F classes, my gear migrated over from Benchrest rifle and hasn't been altered to suit F class.
I have noticed a gradual change over to rear bags but yes it is a personal choice and like all choices driven by the end result and what works for the individual.

When I started F Class open, I imediately noticed the problem with using a paded TR Mat with the rear bag placed on it, elevation. Some people cut holes in them so the bag sat on the groung.
I came up with an idea and had a friend make up a mat for me which incorporated a section where the rear bag goes. This section does not have any padding but a non slip vinyl piece sewn in.
I also needed extra elevation for my rear bag, so I started using a solid block of timber, but on uneven mounds it was not stable. Solution rout out the underside of the block and cut arches, one inch from each corner to the next. This gives you 4 corners to settle into the mound, and a stable surface for your rear bag .
