My name is Steve. So far I've only shot at Eagle Park which goes to 500m. It's a good range with good structure and a very good amount of benches. However, I purchased a 6.5CM with the desire to eventually get into longer range stuff. I recently came across the Geelong Rifle Club which goes to 900m which I was very excited to discover.
They do practice shoots open to visitors 1-2x a month and hold competitions. Since making this post I have spoken to the range manager and he said they hold around 5 SH comps per year so I'm very interested in getting into that.
Thanks to this thread, I'm going to my first come and try day with a lot of useful information on hand and a much better understanding of how this sport works, which I only heard about for the first time in the first thread I made.
I haven't posted in a forum for quite a long time, this was the only one I could find for Australian F Class/SH Class. I quickly made an account and posted. I didn't realise it had become the norm to use your actual name etc. in a forum.
Aside from the strange botcusations, I'm grateful for the information a lot of people have given me on this post. I'm feeling very enthusiastic and perhaps a little over excited to get into this sport. After years of thinking I was limited to 500m, it's been extremely pleasant to discover that there's a 900m range that's even closer to me than Eagle Park.
It's also been very nice to discover that there's a competitive but also seemingly supportive and friendly sport around target shooting. I'd only ever heard of PRS, which doesn't really appeal to me. I enjoy shooting targets and trying to improve each time.
I'm also very much looking forward to being able to shoot prone instead of from a bench, as it seems much more stable to be directly in line behind the rifle rather than curled over on a bench over the rifle. Eagle Park has Benches with a flat back and half circles on each side, these benches make it quite difficult to square up behind the rifle whilst still having enough room for the rear bag to have full contact with the bench.
So, I'm going to go to this come and try shoot, probably join the club and get into the SH competitions.
I'm still very curious on the botchsations though. As I said, I've never heard of a bot posting in a forum and with that, why would a bot post in a very specific forum asking questions from a relatively new shooter?
I have put 260 rounds through my 6.5CM and 300 rounds through my .22 at the time of this post since mid 2021. I got the creedmoor first and the .22 in late 2022. People say to start with a .22 however I had done lots of supervised shoots under licensed friends over the years before getting my own license and had shot lots of rounds through .22, 22-250 (very nice calibre to shoot) and .308.
I keep my ammo boxes so that I can keep track of my round count and I've also kept all my brass for the 6.5CM incase I ever get into reloading, which I likely will one day.
My 6.5CM likes the Sako TRG Precision ammo the most, however it's also been performing well with the Norma Whitetail and surprisingly performed well with the Sellior & Bellot ammo which was very cheap. With that, I won't be able to use the Norma Whitetail for longer ranges as my scope does not have enough internal adjustment unless I use holdover, until I get a 20 MOA mount. However, the Sako TRG Precision only need 8.7mils for 900m and I have 11.4, so it seems I'll be fine with any ammo that has a ballistic coefficient greater than 500 abouts. The Norma whitetail is somewhere around 350. If I'm ever shooting to 1000m at another range, the Sako TRG will need 10.6MRAD which puts me within 8 clicks of my scopes limit, which I hear isn't great for the scope.
When I got my license it took me a long time of debating between the Howa 1500 and Tikka T3X for the 6.5CM. However I settled on the Tikka for the more refined finish, cerekoted barrelled action, heavy barrel as standard, threaded muzzle (though I probably won't use a brake if it's going to annoy people) and the fluted bolt/oversized bolt knob. I also liked the standard features on the stock with the adjustable cheek riser but always intended on upgrading it eventually. As stated earlier I don't really like the ergonomics and I think I'd be much more comfortable with an MDT Field or XRS.
My .22 is a Howa M1100 and it shoots very nicely for the price. My only issue with it is that it will not feed the last round in the magazine (which points straight up) and I counteract this by reloading the magazine every 9 shots and leaving a round at the bottom. The magazine also doesn't have a very audible click when it's inserted which is a little annoying. Other than that it's nicely accurate relatively smooth to operate and I really like the ergonomics. It's a very comfortable rifle to shoot. I enjoy 50mm group shooting as well as rotating target shooting with the .22.
That's a bit about me and my shooting background thus far. Entering into the new realm of joining a club and shooting at longer ranges I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface yet.
Thanks,
