mag primers with 09

Post by BATattack »

Hi all!

Santa brought to me a new FTR bang stick for X mas :-)

I'm thinking of a having a play with 09 and 200-215's using some once fired winchester cases with large rifle primer pocket of course. I'm thinking 2209 might be easier on brass while still getting decent velocity and I use it in other calibers and buy in bulk.

I'm expecting charge weights to be somewhere around 47 to 49gr and more than likely compressed and wondered if it would be worth trying magnum primers for "better" ignition?

Has anyone seen better ES with mag primers and 09 with compressed loads?

I don't know how Santa has throated your chamber but you might find those loads a bit light. With winchester cases and the 210 sierra I'm using 50.6 of 2209. Obviously better to start too low than too high. Never used magnum primers so can't help there.

Thanks Barry. I have a very fast batch of 09 and a 220 throat so I'm being cautions and doing some pressure and velocity testing starting at 46 and sneaking up on it. I've put 48.2 into the case and it's lightly compressed running .010" jam and that's as high as I'm going to try until I get a feel for it.

What sort if velocity are you getting with 50.6 and 210s? I recon I'll be 100ish fps below what you can get with the current chamber.

In my Match Rifle loads,I use Federal Gold Medal 215 Magnum primers with 2209 powder,208 grain A Max,moly coated, depending on the throating of the barrel in use,the load is 49 to 49.4 grains. Two other shooters I know use about 1 grain less powder, but their bullets are not coated.all barrels are 34" Trueflight. All powder loads are loaded with a drop tube, but are not heavily compressed.Winchester cases used.

2680 from 32" kriegers. Comfortably below the ME limits on those ranges which have them and does the job to 1200yds

I had a bit of a play around yesterday and found really good accuracy at 2600fps with no pressure issues at all. That's as high as I tested.

I could probably go higher but I'm really happy with the accuracy
and as a fun gun it will do everything I need.
