Has anyone tried filters on the objective lense to cut down mirage etc, if so waht kind of improvement ???

Reduced it, but in my case, to a level where I was more likely to not notice when it changed, particularly in those tun, boil, run conditions that happen about this time of year when it cools down.
There were only two lenses available when I set myself up both with fairly high polarising values. It seems that degree of polarisation in optical lenses is proportional to the degree of colour - ther darker, the more power to the effect. Stateside, they have lenses of significantly lower polarisation, but my tame optomotrist couldn't source them. It seems that Aussie lens grinders (polarised lenses don't come preprofiled because of the lower consumption) weren't interested.
It's easy enough to try for youself. Grab a cheap chemist shop or Crazy whoever set of polarised sunnies & try them out.
