6.5 x 47 lapua build

Post by 338 EDGE »

Hi all im new to this forum and also new to f class. I have a friend who has just built a rifle in 6.5 x 47 lapua on a trued sako l 579 action with a heavy stainless mab barrel with 1.8 twist but is only 26 inchs long. Stock is a custom thumbhole that looks like it would be suited to prone shooting off a rest . what are your thoughts on this outfit as a f open rifle any advice appreciated. Best regards Mick.

Hi 338Edge, I'm using a 6.5x47L in F-Open and am quite happy with the performance.

The rifle you describe sounds good with a 8 twist 26" barrel you should be able to launch 139gr projectiles to around 2850fps, 130gr VLDs to over 2900fps and 120 grainers to 3000fps. At these velocities you are good out to 1000yds in FO.

Last week at my local club at 500yds in good conditions I shot a 50.5 and a 50.7 using the super v target. At 500 yards I was told by the marker I had an eight shot group that measured inside 1.5".

These things shoot and the Sako you describe sounds good to go FO target shooting and be competitive!

Thank you Ian for your input, sounds like you are getting good results with this chambering thats good to hear. How long is your barrel by the way. Cheers Mick.

I use a 30", 8 twist Krieger barrel and my velocities are a bit higher than what I have given as possible for your 26" barrel.

The 30" barrel gives me 2900fps with 139gr bullets and 3000+fps with the 130gr VLDs.

One limiting factor in all this is freebore, the chamber in my barrel has 0.159" freebore. If you plan on shooting out to 140gr bullets this is what you need.
