Reloading Dies?

Post by sixmill »

G,day,
Moving across to F-standard soon, & as i've got no reloading gear in 308 i was wondering which dies to get. Do i need a full length die, or just a neck die & shoulder bump die? I have Forster & RCBS dies for other cals, they go alright, is a bushing die needed? if so how do i choose a bush to use?
If anyone has some dies laying around they don't use, pm me.
cheers sxml

I think you are going to get a mixed bag of suggestions for this as a number of methods are used.

I use Redding Competition dies and use a bushing die in order not to over work the brass and allow the use of fire formed cases. Look at this link for info http://www.redding-reloading.com/pages/compdies.html

I bought the Competition dies (3) with the fantastic micrometer adjustable bullet seater and neck die which also includes a body sizing die. The neck sizing die can be a Type S Match without the micrometer adjustment if you want to save some money on the set.

If you want to full length size and still have the ability to neck size independently then Redding Type S full length size with bushing is available. Look at this link http://www.redding-reloading.com/pages/ ... atdie.html

I think one of these full length dies is on my wish list for xmas. Full length re-size may be needed every now and again, at the moment I just body bump to keep head space correct.

I'm currently using the following for my .308 loads:

Case Prep: Normally I neck size only with the Lee neck collet die. This die results in amazingly fine runout tolerances when correctly adjusted - see: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=1819 ... b9a8902bda When the cases get tight in the chamber (& that's not often, as the Lee tends not to distort cases much), I body size just enough to chamber easily with a Redding Competition body die.

Seating: I seat with the Redding competition seater, just because I happen to have one around.

Depriming. Sometime back, I was convinced that deparate depriming would save getting crud all over my sizing dies, so I have a cheap as chips Lee press that I deprime only on. The guy that convinced me was right too. It's amazing how much crap falls out the primer pocket or gets onto a depriming die.

As i haven't any cases yet, what bushing would be used with lapua cases, 155smk in a no turn neck?

The range of bushes for 308W from Redding are 0.335" - 0.343". You need to get your brass before ordering your bush. This is what Redding have to say about it...

The easiest way to determine the proper diameter bushing is to measure the neck diameter of several loaded or dummy cartridges with an accurate micrometer. (These dummy cartridges can be loaded with your old set of dies or a borrowed set.) Then, simply subtract 0.001" from the cartridge that had the smallest average measurement. This will allow for a slight amount of spring back and create a proper press fit for the bullet.

You can read all what Redding have to say about selecting the right bush for neck sizing here http://www.redding-reloading.com/techli ... ection.htm
