More SH Class Questions

Introduced in 2019, this class is defined in Chapter 23 of the SSRs. It offers shooters with factory sporting rifles the opportunity of participating at NRAA ranges alongside TR and F-Class.

Alright this forum is ridiculous.

Why on Earth would a bot post this? What purpose would there be?

Hello Tsv900,
Just worked out who you are. This is Peter who did the meet-and-greet with you on Saturday at Geelong. Sorry if there was any confusion but I thought you were just testing out your rifle at the longer distances. Rest assured that we have some very serious Sporter shooters who will very quickly tell you if you are operating outside the rules. On practice days like last Saturday we only insist on the safety rules and allow members to experiment. So I didn't care if your bag had ears but don't try it on a competition day.
If you have questions about the rules and about what is allowed or not allowed just ask. I know a little bit about them.
We were a bit short-handed last Saturday as we had a lot of members shooting elsewhere and a family of four for a come-and-try so again I apologize if you we weren't around to help.
I am also sorry about how you have been treated on this forum. Some people see conspiracies around every corner. I won't be there Saturday after next but please come back and ask all the questions you want. Don't let this experience turn you off NRAA shooting. We have a great club.
PS That bottle of drink is on me.
To all the naysayers, we shot 300m,500m,600m,700m on Saturday all at once and from the one firing point. Geez, its hard enough to attract new members without keyboard warriors sending them away.

Hey Peter

On Saturday you made me feel very welcome and you were a huge help! I was also very impressed with your target rifle shooting and actually had it in mind to ask you more about it and the sights you were using next time I see you there as I'd never seen anything like them. David has also encouraged me to have a go with the club target rifle at some stage.

I am indeed testing out my rifle at longer ranges with the intention of competing at the next available competition. I will absolutely be there again on the 16th and as often as possible going forward! It's by far the best range I've been to and everyone there made me feel welcome and I felt like I had plenty of help.

It was more that after I left the shoot I looked at the NRAA rules and got a little confused as they differ and I wasn't sure how standardized they were. I wasn't sure how much it was going to vary from club to club so I thought I'd post here. In hindsight I should've just waited until the next shoot! However it's also not something I need to worry about right now.

With that, the fact that I don't have to modify my rifle at all to compete without being a disadvantage is a huge relief, with a single feed ramp being the only thing I'll need to purchase. This means I can focus on practicing and improving my own shooting relative to the capabilities of my rifle and not have to worry about modifications. I'll of course get a rear earless squeeze bag as well sooner rather than later so that I can get a feel for it before the shoot.

Is there any that you or anyone here would recommend?

Rest assured I'm very excited to continue on with NRAA shooting and the experience I had with the people at the actual club was very pleasant. Again, you were very helpful and I appreciate your time.

I'll definitely shoot some full 10 round scoring shots at the next shoot to get an idea of where I'm at and I'm looking forward to entering into the next available competition, with plenty of opportunity to practice between now and then.

Careful though Pete, they'll probably think you're a bot coming to aid the first bot!

Thanks again

Accusing me of being a Bot is about as unlikely as you getting an apology from the keyboard warriors.

Well Peter, then you would be wrong.
I don't accept your "keyboard warrior" assessment, as I'm not hiding behind a pseudonym and if not via keyboard, then how is communication done here.

To Tsv900, I got it wrong and I apologise.

Ok, just explaining this one more time.

I hadn't posted in a forum in quite some time. Over the years on forums, seeing people with random user names has always been completely normal and I've never looked at a forum where a person is asking perfectly reasonable questions and thought to myself "geez, that's definitely a bot". Especially given that you know, forums are generally for people to ask questions...

I wasn't aware that it had become the norm to use your full name and location on forums as that has never been the case for me until this forum. It's not as through I actively tried to hide and when I was asked who I was and where I was shooting in my previous post, I answered.

I'm still baffled and confused and what lead half of you to think I'm a bot in the first place. I've never seen a bot in a forum. For what possible reason would a bot post in the forum of a relatively niche and new sport asking questions about the sport? It makes zero sense and is absolutely crazy.

Or is it a fear of data collection? If so, the irony of you assuming I'm a bot whilst also expecting me to share my full information is incomprehensible.

Even in the initial post of this thread, I clearly said that I'd just had my first shoot at the new range and I had explained that I had upcoming shoot at the longer range in the previous post, which you partook in. Even then, you accused me of being a bot because of my targets. Is it not the norm for ranges to have multiple targets open shot from the same location?

I've got to say, it's fortunate that the actual club and people there were very welcoming and gave nothing but good vibes.

If my experience has been just from this forum alone I'd have had a pretty negative impression of the competitive shooting community and I'd have wound up shooting off a useless concrete bench indefinitely, never truly improving my skills.

So, next time there's a casual shooter with limited experience wanting to step into competition that comes in asking questions about it, maybe don't accuse them of being a bot for absolitely no reason.
Also, maybe consider that for the vast majority of people, having a random user name is completely normal. I simply thought up a quick username and posted. Tsv = Tikka Super Varmint, it wasn't something I sat there and put a whole lot of conscious thought and effort into. Also, based off my previous forum experience I didn't know there was an expected requirement to put in my details.

Eith that, even though I'm just starting out, this is a sport I'll be encouraging a few of my friends, who are also interested in stepping it up, to come and try. With that, one of them has a Ruger Precision Rifle in .308 so I'm not sure if that would fall into the production class or open class. It's still under 6.5kg but the chassis may put it outside of a hunter rifle. He said he's happy to remove his muzzle brake for club/potential comp shoots. We'll find out at the club anyway, this isn't me asking. I just find it interesting as it's a tacticalish chassis but it's also light enough to be a viable hunting rifle.

The other has just gotten his license and is starting with a CZ .22 but he's interested in getting a larger cal once he gets a feel for the fundamentals and was very interested in the club when I was telling him about it.

Point being, that's 1 person who will and 2 people who might take up this sport who never would have had I not already been to the club and met the good people there and if my impressions were based off this forum alone.

Just like my previous post, which was finished by the second page with all my questions answered - the second half of this post became me proving I'm not a bot.

Anyway, thank you for your apology.

Also, thanks to the people who answered my question, especially the guy who pointed out that MOA x3 equates to clicks in MRAD to a close enough point to get you on paper. I
I was literally looking into replacing my scope until I learned this. However, the glass clarity of 700m was starting to blur just a little bit in spite of properly adjusted parallex. I'll see how it goes at 800 and 900 when those targets are open and if the clarity becomes more of an issue I'll look into replacing it with something that has better glass.
Don't worry though, I'll save my questions on affordable and viable scopes for somewhere else.

Also a big thanks to Peter putting the botcusations to rest by confirming that I was at the shoot. Onto the next one.

Cheers,

Before buying a new scope ask people at the range if they mind you looking through theirs it might be just mirage you were seeing. It also helps to look though a few different scopes and speak to the owners about likes and dislikes.

Yeah I'm definitely going to see how the glass is at 800 and 900m first. And yeah I was thinking along the same lines, I'll look through some other scopes. I did extensive research when I purchased the Athlon and at the time it was about the best value to quality scope for under $1000. We'll see how it goes. Some of ZeroTech's offerings seem quite good too so that's a potential option.

Cheers,

If you're looking for a good scope for the range for about $1k it would be hard to go past a 2nd hand Nightforce BR 8-32x56.....if you can find one. Just dial it back to 25x for Sporter Hunter and you're right to go.

Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't even considered nigjtforce as I'd assumed all their scopes were 3k+. I had a quick look on usedguns and there's one for 1400. I'll see how this scope performs but I'll definitely keep a used NFBR in mind for potential future upgrade.

There's a used Nightforce BR scope for sale on this forum at the moment. Good price at $1000.
I still use one and its won me a few competitions.
