Maximum load 6.5x47L 130's

Post by Central Desert »

G'Day, I'll be taking deliver of a new 6.5X47 in the next month and plan to use ELD-M 130 grain with 2209. The rifle has 1:8 28" heavy varmint Brux barrel. On the ADI website maximum load for 2209 with 130's is 40.5 grain however on the 6.5x47 lapua Facebook page a member has posted he is getting good results with 42 grains of H4350(2209 being equivalent to H4350). Is this a hot load?
Looking for advice, anyone loading ELDM 130's for 6.5X47 with 2209?

Nobody can really give you a definite sure 42 grains of 2209 will be fine because things like the case capacity, projectile seating depth, freebore and even the BATCH of powder can (and do) make a difference. My latest batch of 2208 required reducing a 43.4 grain load driving a .308 Berger 200.20x to 42.6 grains to get the same 2620 fps as the previous 4kg batch.

Gordon's Reloading Tool is a free (and in my opinion better) version of Quickload (which I also have).

Here's what GRT says for 40, 41 and 42 which includes "Yes, 42 is a hot load with 42.2 going overpressure". It also suggests the OBT nodes are around 41.82 @ 2983fps, or 41.2@ 2936fps or 40.0 @ 2850fps

Safe reloading practice says start low and work up and remember the weather is going to be heating up making your winter-developed load progressively hotter.

With 130gr Berger VLDs my load was 39.2gr of 2209 - that was good for around 2900fps and it shot well at that speed - I never sought to go higher.

Depending on powder batch and throat length I'd be approaching 41.5 with caution. Old toughened brass, long throat, slow batch of powder and bullets with short bearing surface you might get to 42gr but I wouldn't try it untill you get a better feel for the calibre.

Had very consistent accuracy around 40.5ish

I settled on 41gn of AR2209 with the Berger 130gn VLD and was right on 2900fps.

After adjusting the powder profiles to match my real chronongraphed results from this and the other loads in my ladder tests, both quickload and GRT calculate that load is around 59,000psi (max is 62,000).

That's only a guide because there are so many variables and the next keg of AR2209 i open will probably differ slightly and need to be checked with a ladder test to confirm.

What action mate? you'll want a .062 firing pin to make the most of the pressure available in the upper end of your loads. I was getting 2800 from 35.9gr 2208 in a 26" barrel (7.5 TWIST Krieger)
