F Class standard shooters use both. It's a matter of preference. You will probably purchase a bipod cheaper than a bench rest.
There are probably more bipods than benchrests in use, but that does not mean that one is better than the other.

The way the rules are with F-Std, I'd advise a bipod, because you get the benefit of the extra weight (up to 2Kg and possibly more) on your rifle, without it counting towards the rifle's 8Kg weight limit. Pedestal rests can be as heavy as you like, but not being fixed to the rifle, you don't get to enjoy the rifle weight boost.

If you do get a bipod, I'd get one of the purpose-built A-style F-Class ones with a bit of width and weight it.

as Barry says, it is a matter of preference. While I own both types of rest, I use a bipod, only for the reason that, being attached to the rifle, it is more convenient to carry to the firing point, and quicker to set up than a pedestal rest.
I don't go along with the weight theory. If the extra weight of it being attached to the rifle counted for anything, then everyone would be using a bipod, but as you can see, this is not the case, and the people who use a pedestal rest obviously do so because they think that it offers an advantage over a bipod. I just think that in F Std we have enough stuff to carry without the extra burden of a pedestal rest.
