Meplatting and pointing bullets for F-TR - not!

Well I hope someone can prove me wrong, but it appears F-TR shooters may not modify their bullets!

3.4.3.2 Powder:- ADI Sporting Powder:- AR2206, 2206H, 2208, 2209 andBenchmark 8208
3.4.3.3 Cases and Primers:- Not specified.
Handloading Components – 5.56 mm (.223)
3.4.4 Components approved for use in 5.56mm handloaded ammunition as follows:-
3.4.4.1 Projectiles as acquired through the NRAA for State and Territory Association distribution only. Refer to Appendix 1 for a current list of approved cartridges and projectiles.
3.4.4.2 Powder:- ADI Sporting Powder:- BM2, AR2206, 2206H, 2208 and Benchmark 8208.
3.4.4.3 Cases and Primers:- Not specified.

3.4.8 Issued ammunition and projectiles issued for handloading must not be modified or interfered with in any way. The exception is F Open competitors, who should refer to Rule 20.1.1 and Appendix 1.
3.4.9 Use of bullet lubricants is permitted.

(b) Projectiles used for F Open may be modified by competitors. This includes Metplatting and Pointing of projectiles. Ammunition components and powder need not be sourced solely from the NRAA.

There is no allowance provided in F-TR that I can find

Check the ICFRA rule book.
As far as I know the FT/R rules were adopted lock, stock and barrel unlike the other classes which they picked the bits they (the rule makers) wanted and dumped the rest.

Unfortunately that's not the case Matt.

As with the discussion on front rests, the F-TR tech specs WERE extracted, but only that part; the bit extracted is now out of date. It is also preceded by the caveat "NOTE:- Where these rules for F/TR do not specifically cover a particular subject that may arise then the Rules as pertaining to TR shall apply."


The rules we have for F-TR do not specifically cover the modification of projectiles. This can't be seen as an omission because the rules for FO do.
We don't shoot under ICFRA rules, and SSR's seem to prohibit the modification of bullets for all but FO, who have dispensation under rule 20.1.

All F-TR has is

Ammunition may be commercially made or hand-loaded as defined in Rule 20.43. There is no restriction on bullet weight.
20.43 Ammunition may be commercial or handloaded but loaded in a manner consistent with the ammunition industry’s accepted standards; must be safe to fire in the rifle for which it is intended and must meet in all respects the limitations of any range regulations (e.g. calibre, velocity, muzzle energy etc.).

There is one way to find out,shoot FTR in the National's with modified projectiles and see what happens.You will need to find someone to formally protest your ammunition.Personally I wouldn't bother.

Any bullet weight = any make.
Scenar L are factory pointed?
Back to square one I guess?
Personally I am interested in shooting OS so I run by the IFCRA rules.
I do run standard Bergers or Lapua without any mods so is not a personal issue for me anyway.
After testing a few years ago I couldn't find enough of an advantage for all the extra work.

What this highlights is a problem at the foundation of the equipment rules. The statement Where these rules for F/TR do not specifically cover a particular subject that may arise then the Rules as pertaining to TR shall apply is probably always going to be raising this sort of problem. Better to have the equipment rules for each class stand on their own I think.
