Warwick Qld OPM 19th May 2013

Post by ecomeat »

Some 90 shooters lined up to test their wind reading skills at Warwick, on Queensland's Darling Downs on Sunday and most were well tested.
It was a actually a two day shoot, with approx 60 being in attendance for both days, but I was only there for the DDRA OPM on the Sunday.
Shot over 300, 500 and 600 yards, with rapidly changing winds, it was a real test for basically everyone present.
My own F Open 60-10 that I had hoped to shoot at 300 yds with my 6 x 47 Lapua turned into a 57-1 instead, which more or less set the tone for the day.
Cameron and Julie McEwan are both heading to Raton, New Mexico in August for the FCWC as part of the Australian Team and when they shot their 284 Shehanes at 300 for 58-5 and 58-4 respectively, it was a pretty good indicator as to what the day had in store for us.
Nicola Slee (also headed to Raton in August, and just back from the F Class trip to South Africa) showed the benefit of her recent experience and the extra shooting practise with the only 60/60 shot at the 300 yard mark in F Open. Her 60-5 with her F TR rig (.308 shooting 200 gr projectiles) showed that it was possible.

Back to the 500 yard mark, and i had screwed my 284 Win barrel in to replace the 6mm and hopefully improve the score. A 60-5 as the first shooter on our target had a smile back on my face after the a#se whupping at 300, but it wasnt good enough to hold off Cameron who came home well with a 60-6 to take that range.
Julie's 60-3 was the only other possible at 500.
Back to the final range at 600 yards, and again the wind was "very active" with lots of fluctuations.
Cameron and Julie ended up fighting it out for the first two placings in the Aggregate, and it was a good battle to watch.

Their experience and wind reading skills really showed up here as they both did their best to try and catch Phil Dewhurst, from Wallumbilla (out near Roma) who had been "up there" at 300 and 500, and who had just shot a bloody great 60-3 at the 600 yd.
His would be the only possible at that distance, with Cameron shooting 59-4 to take First in the Aggregate for the day,(177-15) Julie Second with her 58-3 (and an Agg of 176-10)and the consistent Phil Dewhurst a well deserved Third place (Agg of 175-11)
Nikki Slee from Cannon Hill club shooting her TR rig was a fine Fourth place on 174-10.
5th and final badge to Meichelle Knudsen from Beaudesert with 171-11, so myself and Andy Odgers on 171-07 both need to shoot more X's next time .

Just behind on 170 in the Aggregate were Aussie reps Mark Fairbairn (170-09), Jenni Hausler (170-07) and seasoned Goondiwindi shooter Col Sutton (170-06).
A total of 16 shooters lined up in F Open.
Manager of the FCWC Team,Jenni Hausler was rightfully pleased with her 600 yards result. Ernie Mace's event winning F Std A score is there as well

In F Standard A Grade, 9 shooters started and a good win went to Ernie Mace with 174-11 for the day. Ernie and Roger Dahl both shot very commendable 58-4s at 600 yds.
A good field of 16 shooters started in F Standard B Grade. and I am pretty sure the win went to Josh Reid from Ipswich.

In Target Rifle, Brisbane's Geoff Grosskreutz had a good win in a field of 27 . Grossy's 147-15 put him 6 V Bulls clear of Shaun Dolan from Murwillumbah (147-09). The ever consistent Andy Mayfield from Ipswich was Third with 146.
Lucky for Grossy that, Under 25s shooter Caleb Pearce's (148-15) was entered in TR B Grade for the last time. I think Caleb might have waved goodbye to B Grade for some time !

The F Open winning rifle-USA bound.

Extreme accuracy and precision shooting at long range can be a very addictive pastime.
