powder for 6mm dasher

#1 Postby Peter L » Tue Mar 24, 2020 5:57 pm

Hi all
I'm a proud owner of a 6mm dasher. Terrific caliber! I always used 2209 powder, but talking to a few NSW dasher shooters, I had to answer this question : What's the matter with you Victorians using 2209? , we in here (NSW) use 2208 mate! Now , some times I have used 2208, no problems there, but my question is how about barrel life? Can you guys throw in some light about those particular powdres for a 6mm dasher?
Cheers
Peter

Peter,

Both powders will work in the dasher, however 2208 is more friendly on barrels.. I wont comment on barrel life numbers too many variables..

Ive found 2208 great for bullets up to 95gr..

Cant go past RL15 in my opinion...

Cheers Alan

Re 15 works great in my two Dashers with 105 hybrids.

Good velocity and small groups, what more do you want!!

Never tried 2209 in it, 2208 shot well but was displaying pressure at lower velocity than Re15 so I have stuck with 15

In don’t load anything for barrel life, it’s about what works consistently on the target.

We have excellent results with 2208 and 105 VLD. With a good bore scope fire cracking can be seen at about 1000 rounds and cleaning intervals have to increase at about 1500 rounds to maintain accuracy. The bore pictured below had most of the damage done running 900 rounds or so as hot loaded 6br before the chamber was recut to a Dasher. It will still hold .5MOA or better all day but it now needs cleaning every three ranges. Velocity is 3050fps out of a 30" Kriger. I don't consider barrel life when load developing

Heck I had good results using 2206h. Barrel life wasn’t great but it shot real nice

Thank you guys.
I got some RL 15 and I'll have a go when all this Corona issue moves to never never. I'll start with 30.5gn and a chronograph. Be safe.
Cheers

Yes, if you have a relatively loose barrel or more slippery, easier to push bullets like the 103 Copperheads, then 2206H works great. For the heavier 107gn pills I prefer to move up to 2208. I have tried 2209 a bit, but needing to compress loads and the worse ES/SD turned me off. Maybe if you had a tighter barrel and trying the heavier 110gn bullets, 2209 might work. Another thing I found was with 2208 I could go 3 ranges without accuracy dropping off, where as with 2 barrels I tried, it appears they started to foul out early, likely pressure was not high enough?
Sorry but I don't have any input on barrel life as I never ran 2209 for long enough.
