Re: 7mm - 08 Ackley Improved information Blog!
Howdy folks, I am new to your site, hope you don't mind a Lad from Colorado dropping in.
Shaun, are you using a standard 7-08 AI chamber? I have heard a rumor there was some work being done to move the shoulder a bit further forward than the AI's, do you know anything about it?
Regards

Thanks for the warm welcome Graham
I don't think there was a change in shoulder angle as much as moving the shoulder 1-3 mm forward. This would leave a fairly short neck I think, however I am speculating as I have not seen one.

CW,
Hey mate. Yeah we modded mine a tad to get more out of it. But not extreme. Seemed to have helped a bit I think but unsure how much. We wanted to get as much out of the cartridge as possible.
Regards
Shaun

Throating the chamber to get the projectile seated out to get it above the donut zone is the best way to have the chamber IMHO.

I am going to order a reamer soon, any specs or tips you care to share?
Pretty excited to get started on this. I was planning on a 32" barrel for this 7-08, what have you found works best?

Re: 7mm - 08 Ackley Improved information Blog!
Hi Mate , I wouldn't go a 32 " as it's such an efficient case that whatever it was going to do it has already done it by 30". And in fact has shown to disrupt accuracy in some members guns . But by all means try it an let us know how u go! Mine is 30" and I'm getting about 2800 fps sometimes 2820 on warmer days . Lap .308 large rifle brass , fed primers , 180 vld's jammed an 47 Gr of 2209. My gun loved hybrids but none can be bought anywhere ! The load for that was same as above but 46.7 as it was seated further into the case eg more pressure . I would settle for a .314-5 though neck. I use a Redding Ai neck die and I use a standard Lee 7-08 die set and seat my projectiles with the seater as it's the same principle as a Redding Comp seater. There isn't a commercial Redding 7-08 Ai Comp die set but maybe a 260 Ai could suffice ! You will have to neck turn and I wouldn't go any further that .310 neck dia! I'm running 2 thou clearance with a .312 neck dia! So a little to close for comfort! I've learnt how to read a set of micrometers quickly ! I fireform with 168's at club or u could even fireform at an Opm up to 500 yds in good conditions . I happen to beat both of my club mates last year with there .284's at 300 yds fire forming . The fireforming load is 168 smk or Bergers , 46 Gr 2209 and a fresh lap brass .308 win prepped case! Good news is the 100 lap .308 brass is only $88 as against $190/ 100 .284 win ( last I looked ). There's only 150 fps between a Saum and a 7-08 Ai . But 16 grains of powder , cost of the brass and if u can get it . Also barrel life will be in the high 2000 in the 08 Ai , I'm predicting if looked after! But the advantage ballistically with the Saum over the 7-08 Ai is not much in that one still has to wind read and do it exceptionally well to win whether with a Saum or 08 Ai or .284 win
Hopefully if the weather holds , I'll be taking it to 1000 yds this weekend ! Also only use really good brass as this puppy is very much in the upper areas of pressure. Watch out for case head expansion . My cases are doing very well as I'm now up to the 8 th fireing on some an just annealed them and still hanging tuff! It's not uncommon for primers to fall out so tapping the bench and good Qc control and management is needed , it's a Ferrari . One thing I notice is when I shoot bad everyone comes up to me says that I need a .284 win or Sheehane or Saum , until the next range when the nut behind the butt pulls a good one and then the knockers are quiet ! Good luck , it's a brilliant little case ! Regards Graham.

Please note , the loads stated were safe in my gun ( panda action) ! Always work up loads , especially with this cartridge !

Graham, thanks for the info, what reamer are you using.....a standard 7-08 AI?

Graham, I have another question.
Is there a reason you are using 308 Lapua instead of 7-08 Lapua?
I see where some shooters are using Palma brass, what advantage does this provide? Primer pockets stay tighter longer?

For me , .308 lap brass , I had a box of 100 already so why not! The 7-08 brass is a fare bit dear , so it's just cost I guess!
I think Palma brass is an advantage with case head expansion, but is getting very hard to get ( leave it for my standard rifle. Remember was only moonlighting in open at the time, but that has changed now it seems!)
Just remember with small rifle primers ( non magnum ) u need another .4-.5 Gr of powder .
Regards Graham .

1000 yds , first time , it held good waterline . The 2 nd round 15 count went well but can't remember the score
( we're in a hurry to pack up!) but had a run of x's and 6's with somebody from Northarm coaching ! Quite happy ! About 1/2 min diff between a Saum and the 08ai . But I was the only one with an 08 Ai , all on my lonesome ! Lol!

That probably would have been Andrew coaching.
