I am thinking of having another rifle built for F Class and 500m Fly shoots. I have an Omark action and also a Winchester Model 70 Magnum action spare. I was thinking a 6.5/284 on the Omark or a 7mm Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag on the Winchester. Which one guys?
Cheers
Matt
Which action?

Matt,
The 6.5 would be the way to go, on the omark. But have it built by someone who knows how to true actions well as both actions will need a bit of work, or a lot. If you go for a belted case there is no major problems just get good cases and batch them out. Go the 300 win mag and get lapua cases and go from there. I have built quiet a few 6.5 284's for fly shooting and they are a great calibre, so is the 300 win mag but if you go for one of these bigger cases make the rifle heavy class around the 30-40 pound mark, it makes them a dream to use. This however will rule you out of f class with weight so that would make the 6.5 more appealing. One last thing have a good think about selling both your actions for finance and get a custom action for your rig. eg viper, panda, bat, neiska.
regards,
Shane

Matt,
While I did question your going to 7mm Mag or .300 Mag in F-Class, that wasn't necessarily saying you shouldn't go above 6.5mm. If you're more concerned about 1000 yd performance, then the straight .284 Win is a definite contender, esp. since the availability of the 175grSMK. Recoil is acceptable if you have a good stock and rest setup, barrel life is theoretically better, and because of the higher BC, performance at the long longs will be at least as good as 6.5mm.
I know of one Omark in this calibre. If you are interested it would be worth sending a PM to a.JR (Jeff Rogers) - he's had experience with .284 Win, and as you may already know, is a very accomplished rifle builder and load developer.
