Berger recommend 1 in 10 or faster.

Yes I know, but realistically 215's are on the ragged edge with a one in 10 twist. Apart looking at the drift tables I cant see a benefit of the 230's over the 215's due to the max velocity you can shoot the 230's at Belmont. Also with 215's which I made work well in some barrels I feel that you have an issue with powder speed, really 2209 is what you need, but you cant get enough in. On barrels that I could not make work I experimented briefly with double base powders, but due to work I have not had time to finish off all tests. I did find though that barrels that would simply not work with 215's worked well with a slower double base powder. This proved to me this is were the issue is.. Now with 230's I would be thinking about a one in nine twist and a slow powder, but now you have case volume issues and the twist of course is making it all the harder to get going increasing the need for a slower powder. Gain twist would probably work, but why when a 200 Jack for example would beat both of them in the wind anyway and it is far easier to get going. Also the more I shoot the more I feel that shot to shot accuracy is far more important than a massive projectile that can beat the wind, most with the big projectiles have more issues controlling the rifle and loose points in other ways.
My advice for what it is worth, if you shoot 215's moly use one on ten twist and spend the time if you can make them work to learn to control the rifle (not easy). Unless you just want to play with 230's just for fun dont bother, if you run the numbers on the Berger page a 230 doing 2500 is beat by a 215 doing 2700 so what is the point?

G'day Chris,

This mainly is for shits and giggles. I'm only a club level shooter, and I only shoot open. I'm putting together a barrel blocked ftr rifle with a 1:9 barrel. I'm using a blueprinted remington action, so I don't want to run the pressures needed to get a 215 to 2700fps (70k+ psi). I can get to 2500fps with much tamer pressures with the 230a but as you have noted, case capacity is a problem. I was hoping with the relative unpopularity of the 230, they might be easier to get a supply of.

I had a 1:9 308 that I shot in open as it tipped the scales at about 9kg with a joypod. I was on a node at an extremely pedestrian 2370fps with 2209, but it was insanely accurate. My club mates called it a mortar, and it really did drill the x ring a lot better than it should have. I shot it free recoil, which shouldn't have worked, but it did.

This time around I will be playing with RL16 as i now have a half reliable supply of it. I'll also be aiming to get a longer drop tube to try cramming enough 2209 into the case.

If 200 jacks were available anywhere, I would be shooting them. If the new sierras didn't cost $1.50 a pill, I'd probably give them a run too.

I'll only be shooting against myself, so I'm having an experiment with the barrel block and big pills. If I want to give ftr a more serious run, it will probably be with a bigger action and 200 or 210vlds run hot.

If you mess with 215's moly then and wet moly (pm me if you want to know how) and use Palm brass you wont have any issues with pressure. I dont know anyone who got 230's to work, not saying it is impossible but some of the best in Aus have tried and failed. 210vld's are the easiest heavies to get going I have found loads any of my barrels (1 in 10) with them apart med palma barrels which like 185 jugs. I have a couple of amazing 215 barrels but I also have a LOT which they wont work in, but they will in last experiments with double base and moly (I always use moly for heavies). My opinion is 200's will be the bullet of choice in the future, 210 are great too and the vld 210 drifts similar to the 200 hybrid anyway. My advice is 230 will be nightmare to shoot accurately and even harder to get going. Read the wind better and shoot the most accurate round you can. Coaching I have has 185vld going really slow, 210vld slow, 200 20x going fast and 215 going just under the limit. The bloke shooting the 185vld in high wind was giving me the best scores. I dialed in the extra wind after the sighter and worked in the new band. Yes you get blown out easier, but accuracy will always win bullet weight. I have two out of maybe 15 barrels that tac 215's, it is far easier to get something else running. I am one of the few shooters in Aus making 215's work, but I still advise against them as other factors are an issue with them. Speak to Steve Laz he won a Queens with 155's, know your bullet and the smaller the more rifle control.

I am building a 300wsm, long throated, to shoot 230 berger OTMs from a 9 twist bartlein HV barrel on a savage large shank action in a GRS stock. I expect to get 2750 at least from 2213 powder, maybe 2800 ? I do not care about belmont or bendigo as I will be shooting it in NSW, mainly , or other parts of victoria. If I dont have any success with 230grs I may try 215s and 210s, but thats going to be my starting point. I will let you know how it goes....

Hi Alex
I might have some berger 230 tacticool projies.
I'll check tonight.
You may have to buy some cammo if you want them to shoot well...

G'day Tim,

I'm afraid the tacticools are no good to me - I've got no camo gear (I don't even own a creedmoor!)

On a more serious note, the otm/tactical ones give up too much to the 215s to entertain using them.

If anyone has any of the non tactical ones (30430) I'm still interested. I'm keen to see what they can do with a long drop tube and some rl16 still.

Alex
