WTB: 308 micrometer seating die ***FOUND***

#1 Postby PeteFox » Tue Oct 13, 2020 11:21 am

Wanted:
A .308 micrometer type seating die. Redding or Forster or similar, threaded type, not Wilson.
Just the seating die, not looking for a set

Fwiw Pete all I've ever used is a plain Wilson seater die and I just keep a wrtten vernier caliper measurement of the top unit for each bullet setting I am running. Bloody simple and easy. Perhaps theoretically less accurate than a micrometer setting but I very much doubt it in the 'real world'.

I’ve used Wilson straight line dies since the early 90’s and its so slow.
Ive just bought a Dillon 550 and I’m going to progressive reloading (sort of) following F Class John’s method.

I don't have much confidence in conventional seating dies to keep the alignment true which I’d why I’m looking at the Forster/Redding, they will also have a better seating stem that doesn’t push on the point of the projectile.

Pete I know farkall but if the seating die stem is touching on the boolit tip then there's a problem with the consistency but I have actually never bothered to check that with my gear. Seems to me with many things in this game that a good 'mechanical' inquiry into so much of it will help a lot ...

Rich,
Thanks for you generous offer.
There is no stock that I can find of any Redding or Forster in Australia, and seeing I need two it was doubly bad.
I need two because I want to leave my toolheads setup. (2x very different 308 setups)
I found some Forster dies in the US and they’re on the way.

Great to hear, funnily enough that’s my exact plan too, only using a upgraded 450 for the solid frame, I’m just trying to develop a fast powder plan to keep up, so far checking chargemaster onto gempro, however I see a custom powder drop die/funnel in my future, I was hoping to use a measure but couldn’t get the consistency I wanted
