#1 Postby Tim N » Tue Sep 18, 2018 9:13 pm

Hi All,
This might be a “long shot” but I’m after a sako A1 varmint in good condition.

The least possible of course :D
Somewhere towards $2k for something worthwhile.
Do you have one?

I only have L461s. Can't beat them for short action cartridges. A1's seem to be few and far between. The guys as J&A Shooting in Horsham may be worth a call. They tend to turn up that sort of thing.

Hey Alwyn,
Any calibre will do, plan is to shoot it as is or rebarrel to a 20 cal of some sort.
I have stumbled onto a sako collector willing to part with one of his many :D

Mine is chambered in 20VT and is the tits. Got one of Maddco's triggers for it too. Exceptional spotlighting rig. Does he have any more he wants to part with?

L461/A1 ideal 20 cal for this action is 20HI based on the 223 case. This action along with the Sako 85 is a bit short for the std 204, it will work, but not ideal. The 20VT as Alwyn has found, is also suitable, but the 20HI is a simpler conversion insofar as dies & brass are concerned & more performance than the 20VT. I suggest a 10 or 11 twist barrel & use 40grn bullets & you have a mini 22/250 with much better barrel life, win, win!!!!

Keith what is a 20HI? Is it similar to a 20 Practical? I had dreams of building a fast twist 222 Rem Mag for 53gr Vmax pills on one of mine, but the action is just a wee bit short.

Hi Keith
One thought I had was a 204 reamer run in to 222 case length, use quality Lapua cases and suit the action length?
We discussed this on another forum and was told the rear of the chamber would need to be opened up a little bit to allow for the case to extract?
Thinking was the shortened 204 die wouldn’t size the base of the case?
Any thoughts?

That is basically what barossa is talking about timmy. 222 rem mag is what the 204 was based on. 222 rem mag AI is a bloody lot of juice in a 223 boltface rilfe.

One I’m thinking of doing is smaller than a 204
Only 222 length
I have a sako 85 in 204 and it is a sweet bit of gear
Over 1000 rounds on it and it still shoots great

I have my eye on the 224 Valkyrie and the 22 Nosler. I know Jerome Zeirsch has a reamer for a 20 Nosler which might fit the bill. It's like a 284 scaled down.
If you have a 204, why not build something different? Like a 17-222. I have a 6.5 Grendel coming for smacking kangaroos with 85gr Sierras and I have a short throated Dasher on a Sako 85 too . . . . . Ooooo and a really nice 6mm AI on a rem that vapourises things . . . . . . I like varmint rifles a little bit. . . .

The 20HI chamber is cut with a 204 reamer run in to 223 case length. Dies are 204 dies shortened to 223 length, it works a treat.

Too complicated....I am a fan of the KISS system. The 20HI is so much easier & mine works a treat as do a couple of others that I have done for customers!!!!!
