Successful 6mm for long range

#1 Postby Tim N » Wed Jun 27, 2018 6:30 am

Hi All,
I have been slowly exploring this topic.
Has anyone experienced (good) consistency at long range with a sub 7mm?
6 and 6.5 are perceived as good short to mid range but the longs belong to 7mm and above???....
I remember a Canberra queens a few years back where a 6mm came 2nd and 1st? another year.
Anyhow if you have some info to share please do.

Tim N, Several 6mm's do very well at long range. Same with 6.5's. 6mm's myself I've been shooting originally as an across the course rifle and a prone long range gun and a F class gun. The rifle I built the shop is in 6x47 Lapua. I actually used it last year in the team matches for the F class nationals.

I will agree that they do make a better mid range gun but that doesn't mean they cannot compete/win at 800, 900, and a 1k yards. I've even shot mine at 1200 yards. What you run up against though is if the wind conditions get tricky/go sour on you. The 7's and the .30's will give you an edge.

My new gun has two barrels. 6.5 for mid range and some long range work but my other barrel is a .30cal.

Later, Frank

Depends what discipline your shooting... ask the Montana 1kBR boys what shoots most consistent out of any cal. My bet is the 6BR ackley. All you need for f class is some form of speed loading ammo block

Tim , I have had both 6mm and 6.5 over the years and both can do very well at long range. Wind is always a factor and thats as you know where the 7mm shine . A good 6.5 will do very well at the longs in F class and can be very consistent and are a bit closer in terms of drift to the 7mm at long range than the 6mm. The 6mm can shoot amazing accuracy but is gets bucked by the wind a little more so there is a trade off for each one.

I have a 6BRA and a 260AI , If I was group shooting , say Fly shoot or Benchrest I would take the 6mm , For F Class I would take the 6.5mm ..

IMO and IME the 6s punch above their weight but they are still a middle weight trying to knock out in the heavy weight division...not impossible but not good odds either....
6s can be pushed hard and still have good life and hold good vertical, plenty have run the 6BR with a 105 in the 2950+ range. Improved versions are somewhere around 3050. They are a joy to shoot, low recoil and very precise...make no mistake the mrs shooting a good 6 can make you look very average...

Gday Tim.

Interested to read the responses to this question.

I have only recently got on board the Dasher band wagon. Replacing my 6.5x47 with it.

My line of thinking is it will be used for club shoots and your typical OPM that is only shot up to 600yards.
So far I have only shot it at the club on three weekends testing loads and we have had some pretty ordinary conditions of late which have not seen flattering scores or groups.

I managed a 90.10 at 600yards late in the day that did not count.

We got blown all over the target at 700 and last weekend we shot 800, again getting blown side to side, however elevation was around 2.5inches so it’s showing promise.
I am hoping for some kinder conditions tomorrow at 900yards.

If conditions are consistent then apparently the Dasher is unbeatable up to 1000yards however when do we ever get consistent conditions??

My thoughts are that the 284 is nearly as capable of hammering as many x’s. Is pretty mild to shoot and easy to keep in tune.

Would I take the Dasher over the 284 to a queens?? I don’t think so, over the three days I think the 284 will grant you a few extra points somewhere along the way.
Would I take both?? Yes definitely but keep the 284 for the longs.

Interested to hear others thoughts on the hotter 6mm

But for score shooting ballistically the 7mm gets it done

I think you should shoot a 6BR at the next South Australia Queens. I'll give ya the components and a barrel to do it.

I would be keen to see how the 6x47 goes when you move up to the slightly heavier 110gn and 115gn bullets. Their BC is closer to what the 6.5s and 7mm usually run. Has anyone here done much with the 110 and 115gn pills in a faster twist barrel?

One of our club members run the 115gr’s in a 6x47 with a 1:8 barrel and she gives most of us a hiding all the way out to 800yds, that rifle and shooter are a wicked accurate combination..... at 900 and 1,000 yds runs with the 284’s in moderate winds....... now if there were a Queens that ran to 800yds with general moderate winds...... it would be in the running.

Only if you shoot a 223

I have a 7 twist 6mm barrel ready to be chambered in 6x47 just to see how the 110-115 projies go.
Has anyone used a 7 twist?

I think you need the 7.5 twist bartlein at least for 115 grainers.they are pretty long bullets

with the 108s in the 6x47 all my really good groups and high x counts were at the mid ranges, not longs. so the 115s might be worth a try if you have the twist for them.
id quod est

I don't shoot on the same level as most of the people here (I'm just a club level weekend warrior), but I am shooting a 6brx with a 8-7 gain twist bartlien and have have very favourable results out to 900 yards with the 110 smk. I'm using BM8208 and getting approx 2900fps

It doesn't buck the wind like my 284 does or wsm did, but it's good ballistics have certainly kept my bad calls in the 6 ring a surprising number of times.

There's a bloke shooting at Hornsby who recently had a 6x47 lapua, and a 284 win spun up. The barrel on his 6mm is a 1:7 twist and he's running the Berger 115s...At 800 metres practice today his 6x47 outperformed his 284 - winds were a head/crosswind averaging about 21kmph but gusty, not conducive to good scores. So far he is liking what he is seeing.

One point to consider for the little 6s in F-class and manual marking. Its harder to find the bullet hole and to detect the shot. IME in windy, changeable conditions it can lead to marking delays and often calls to the butts to examine for impact. Not because the shot is out but its just harder for the marker to detect, less back stop splash etc.
On an ET and nice conditions they are a a joy to shoot.
