Mounting a Nightforce BR on a Sako s491 in .223

#1 Postby Phildon » Wed May 30, 2018 3:54 pm

We have just purchased a Nightforce BR 12-42x56 for my wifes Sako S491 chambered in 223. There is currently a Vortex Viper
6-24x60 mounted I think on Burris mounts. The problem is that the starting elevation is currently 32 minutes of elevation at 300 yards.

What do I need to mount the NF and utilise its 40 minutes of elevation?

I know a fair bit about fullbore but not much about scopes. :(

Any help would be appreciated.

Phil.

Phil,
You need a tapered rail for mounting the scope on.
A rail with 20 moa taper would then make your starting elevation at 300 around 12 moa. This would leave you 28 moa for elevating. However you would probably need 26 moa of that to get to 1000 yards --not enough left. That is one of the problems with the 42x scope, it limits the amount of elevation available.
You could put on a 25 moa rail. This would reduce the 300 zero to 7 moa and add 5 to that available for longer distance ( 1000 Yards )

Thanks Barry for the info.
Do you or anyone know where I can source a rail for the Sako S491? I can't find much in Google
especially in Aust. and nothing for a 25 moa rail.

Drop it off at a gunsmith and they will make one to suit for you.

i have two sakos and a tikka t3 all with sako optilok bases and rings,i found that if you put a .5mm shim between the base and ring on your rear mount it will give you about 20moa,optilock rings have a nylon type ring in them so they will always align themselves and won't mark your scope.Could be an easy fix for you and good quality mounts.just a thought for you
