6.5 Creedmore - anyone?

#1 Postby Tim N » Tue May 01, 2018 8:12 am

Hi All,
Is anyone using one of these for F Open?
I know some were saying the 6.5x47 was a bit under powered for the 140s so is the creedmore attracting any followers here?
There's alot of hype surrounding it and there's plenty of other 6.5s available with more boiler room...
Just wondering.

Hi Tim
I am shooting a Howa 26 inch barrel in 6.5CM. I am just getting back into long range shooting after a 10 year break but have found the calibre awesome.
Shooting 140 grain Hornady ELDM's over 42 grains of AR2209 in Nosler cases lit by a Federal 210 primer. Projectile is seated 20 thou of the lands and the load groups 1/4 to 1/2 moa. Will use the Howa until I burn it out then upgrade to a custom job. Thought I should get some practice in with a cheaper set up after a long break before shelling out for a full custom kit.

I recently played with a 6.5x47. It did shoot well but I cannot get the velocity I want with 139s or 140s without degrading cases more than I want.
Without having tried a Creedmore, I suspect it will be marginally better and today if I made the choice it would be a Creedmore over a 6.5x47.
At the time I was concerned that the Creedmore would be a 2 year wonder then die off but that seems to not be the case. If anything I now believe the 6.5x47 will fall by the wayside sooner.

But now I am playing with a 6.5x55 totally unmodified Swede and honestly prefer it over both of the other cases. I had for years used a modified Swede fairly successfully in shoots. Just wanted to see how good an unmodified Swede can be out of curiosity. So far my impression is that I would prefer this over either the Creedmore or 6.5x47. But I am more interested in longer range shooting. OK - it is not up to a good 7mm but good fun.

This was a good article:

http://demigodllc.com/articles/6.5-shoo ... creedmoor/

I had a 260 AI and it was a very good rifle......... but the swede would be a good choice too. and both of those have lapua brass. In the case of the swede, no fireforming required. I think the swede AI is good too (not from personal exp) but then you are getting into the 6.5-284 barrel life issue.

I had my almost new 260rem converted to 6.5 Creedmoor, and I thought what a load of hype !!!!!!!!!! But here's the thing, with the same rifle/bedding/barrel simply setback 4mm and rechambered the Creedmoor is shooting .250, 1/4 moa for 10 shot groups at 100m and about .3 or 1 inch groups at 300m for 5 shots on a calm day, where as the same rifle in 260rem was .5 moa and 100fps faster...plus an extra 8 grains of powder. plus barrel life is longer, oh also socom(thats the US armed forces have chosen it as there next military caliber)

An interesting but maybe irrelevant observation.
The 6.5 Creedmore is very close in length to the Jap Arisaka and also the Italian Carcano although the last one usually was loaded a bit down because of the rifle it was in. Sort of full circle. That is comparing case size. Shape is different of course.

For more serious longer range target shooting the 260 Rem makes a lot of sense.

BUT there is one thing most forget. We live in Australia where it can be difficult to obtain a reliable supply of anything and it seems to be getting worse.

There are a few 'eternal' cartridges - the cases will probably be around forever.....

308 is one. 6.5x55 Swede is another. Both of these are available in quality cases considerably cheaper than many other more attractive cases.
Perhaps the 30-06 is another although less so in Australia.

Again, this may be irrelevant for serious accuracy target shooting but I have pushed 139 Skenars out of an unmodified SWEDE case (30 inch barrel) at well over 3000 f/s with NO case degradation. Just for fun I will go a bit higher. That is, of course, in a Barnard action. I think I know my best load is at about 2960 but I want to see what are the limits. No way can you get anything like this out of a 6.5x47 from my experiments. Creedmore I don't know what is the limit. I doubt that a 260 Rem can even match this.

Some of the heavier target bullets now becoming available may well suite this 6.5x55 cartridge even better. That remains to be seen.

Some would ask - why not a 6.5x284 if chasing velocity. Apart from barrel wear - the 6.5x55 is a far more available case ready to go out of the box.

And if it all fails to deliver, I will just go back to my 7 mm RSAUM for more serious work.

Lapua have 6.5 Creedmoor cases available with small primer pockets at about the same price as 260Rem and cheaper than 6.5x47 (on the qstore website atm) but dearer than 6.5x55.

I think it is worth a go...for PRS!

While we are talking about the 6.5CM has anyone got a good starting load for 140gr pills with either 2206H or 2208?

I suppose if it’s a military caliber it will be around for some time

Since no one else has answered about loads for the Creedmore 6.5 for 140s and using 2208 powder I will throw this in.
It does not directly answer the question but may be of use.

36 grains of 2208 in a 6.5x47 behind 139 grain bullets is a fairly safe starting point.
37 grains is better but pressure really seems to avalanche and peak quickly and any more will start to destroy cases.

Creedmore cases are a little larger so should take a bit more powder but I wonder if 2209 may be worth a try behind 140 grain bullets in a Creedmore which is in effect 6.5x49.

Seems like the Creedmore and 6.5x47 were really designed with lighter projectiles in mind. I used 139 or 140 grainers simply because I had a few thousand on the shelf and suspect at the longs they will be better.

I have done a bucket load of research in recent months on 6.5 cartridges and was steered towards doing a tad more on the 6.5 Super LR, to me after all my reading it looks to be the goods on both barrel life (due to shoulder angle) and case capacity!! Downside is the need to form brass, but with a few lads around all working together it seems .308 palma brass forms quite nicely with minimal effort.

Check it out if a short action fast 6.5 is what you are looking for..
